Tim Williams is a great pure pass rusher, but I do have questions where he will be a 3 down linebacker or just a situational pass rusher
He should just be used a pass rush specialist mostly. Bama tried to use him as an every down player this past season and it didn't work. He will be great if just used on passing downs.

And that's why I don't rank him as high. If I'm taking an edge rusher early (especially Round 1), he better be a 3 down guy. Situational pass rushers can be found in the mid rounds.

I can't believe people willing to give up a 1st or 2nd overall pick for a guy that started 2 games in his career in one of the more QB friendly systems you can find that he's been in for 3 years.

Dude is going to have immense pressure to hit the ground running and so is any team that trades the world for him and signs him to a big contract.
He was rated high on a lot of team sports draft board and initially that's why they'd be willing to take the risk. Shannahan said he had Jimmy number 2 behind Carr on his qb board when Cleveland decided to go Manziel

Lol good pass rushers can not be found in mid rounds. He could be a 3 down player but he would be more effective used correctly. He would still play a lot and have just as much impact if not more

Teams Split on Jabrill Peppers Being a First-Round Pick

Michigan star defender Jabrill Peppers is one of the most intriguing prospects for the 2017 NFL Draft. Last season, Peppers was a Heisman Trophy candidate in leading a tough Michigan defense while also being a star on special teams and contributing some on offense. For the NFL, there has been some question on how Peppers fits with most teams projecting Peppers to be a hybrid dime linebacker and safety, similar to Arizona safety Deone Bucannon. However the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Peppers is a bit undersized for that role. Given the questionable position fit, WalterFootball.com surveyed teams to see if they thought Peppers would be a first-round pick, and teams were split 50-50 on Peppers going in the first round.

Three teams said they thought that Peppers would end up going on Thursday night. They thought that his range was from the middle of the first round to late in the first round. One AFC director of college scouting said of Peppers, "Probably will go in the first after he tests well at the combine. I would say 20-30 range." Peppers is known to be a great athlete, so impressive workouts at the combine and are pro day are expected.

Three other teams said they thought Peppers would go early in the second round. The position fit, concerns about him in pass coverage, and being a bit undersized in a safety/linebacker role to tackle NFL running backs were working against Peppers. One national scout for a NFC team had this to say about Peppers, "He's a smaller Landon Collins. He has to be a safety in my opinion, but he has even less coverage exposure than Landon did coming out as a pure strong safety."

Thus, Peppers needs to live up to expectations with a strong combine, pro day, and private workouts to help his chances of going on the opening night of the draft. It only takes one team to fall in love, and there are a number of teams in the middle to late first round that could use an upgrade at safety. However, heading into the combine, teams are split on if Peppers will end up being a first-round pick.

No talk about wade phillips turning that ram defense into a 3-4?

What a way to fuk up a good thing

Wade phillips 3-4 is a hybrid version. Gonna have alot of elements of a 4-3 defense. More teams play in the nickel nowadays instead of base 3-4/4-3 anyway.

- Lorenzo Alexander went undrafted
- Danielle Hunter was drafted in the 3rd round
- Cliff Avril went in the 3rd
- Cam Wake went undrafted
- Erik Walden went in the 6th

And all of those guys were in the Top 10 in sacks this year
Good post.

And almost all these guys are situational players... part time players who are in the right scheme to rush the QB.

Sacks are probably the most overrated statistic in football right now. What are teams doing on 1st and 2nd down is more important than 3rd down.

Can you stop the run?

Can you cover RBs out the backfield?

Can you disguise coverages to fool above average QBs?

All these things are just as important in today's NFL than 'sacking' the QB. Most teams are offensively scheming to get in 3rd and shorts, which takes away the effectiveness of a 4-3 DEs to impact the pass rush.

This is not 1984... lol

CBs can't touch WRs... which has changed the fukking game. Even with a top 10 defense, you still need to score 23+ points a game to win in this league.

In today's NFL, the peak value for the 6'4 260 lb DEs is in the second round, IMO.

Dominant safeties, CBs with size, and coverage + rush LBs are all of higher premium than one dimensional 260+ lb DEs who rush the passer.

These guys are simply not 3 down players in our league anymore.

Versatile DTs who can stop the run on 1st and 2nd, and can rush from the nose guard position on 3rd down impact the game more than old school DEs.
