You said "Neck & Neck", so I think 1a, 1b. Big 12 was definitely better than it is today, OK, UT, Mizzou, Colorado, Nebraska although UC and NEB fell after the early 2000s.

Exactly. But who else was that much better? Ohio St was the only real national title contender/winner in the Big 10. USC was the only real contender/winner in PAc-10.

So again, other than SEC, the Big 12 was right near the top thruout the 00's. You had multiple teams playing in BCS bowls and contending for national title games.
