why not just pay Wade 30-35 mil for this season, with the understanding that he will be taking smaller contracts from here on out to help with cap flexibility?

I still feel like they owed him one massive payday

As far as I know the most they could have offered him for this season was 23 mil, word is he chose between 20 mil for 1 yr or a multi year deal 3-4 yr in the neighborhood of 60 mil.

You're right. Even after this $4 mil bump, he lost $25 mil over the life of the contract he signed in 2010. I think the max he could've signed for this year was like $24 mil, but they're trying to avoid the luxury tax, so that's probably why that didn't happen. They came to some sort of understanding, because Wade is cooperating with whatever plan Riley laid out for him.

@AlbertRandom1 on Twitter has a lot of good cap related and Heat related info/articles. He broke down the team's cap situation for next year, and as long as Wade takes less than $15 mil per then, it leaves the full max open for Whiteside or whoever. So in theory, he could get up to 3 yrs/$45 mil and give the team the room it needs to work on keeping Whiteside or getting KD.

All of that goes out the window if they get Aldridge though. Then they can give Wade whatever.
