The Knicks are trying to set up a pick swap with the nuggets where they would get the nuggets lowest pick next year (the nuggets own the Knicks 2016 first from the melo trade) so the Knicks are basically trying to get their first rounder back

So something with the Knicks and nuggets is definitely possible

the Nuggets have the right to swap picks with the Knicks next year, with the lesser of the two picks going to Toronto (thanks to the Bargnani trade).

that would leave us with no pick next year. not ideal for a team with little to no shot at the playoffs.

I like Justin Anderson from Virginia here. We need a SG. Who knows how Wes Mathews responds after his surgery. And Afflalo could opt out and be a free agent this summer (he wasn't all that impressive anyway, we should have kept Wil Barton).

@Serious @thelonious21 @thenatural What do you guys think?
It's official...Afflalo opted out:

Report: Afflalo To Become Unrestricted Free Agent

According to David Aldridge of TNT and NBA.com, Trail Blazers guard Arron Afflalo will opt out of the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent. Afflalo joins the likes of LaMarcus Aldridge, Wesley Matthews and Robin Lopez as unrestricted free agents going into the July moratorium.

Afflalo played 25 games for the Trail Blazers after being acquired along with Alonzo Gee at the 2015 trade deadline in exchange for Will Barton, Thomas Robinson, Victor Claver and a lottery-protected 2016 first round pick. The 6-5 guard in his eight season out of UCLA averaged 10.6 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.1 assists in just over 30 minutes a game as a Blazer, shooting 41 percent from the field and 40 percent from three.

The Trail Blazers were tied for the third-best record in the Western Conference when the team acquired Afflalo with hopes that the veteran wing could bolster Portland’s bench and improve their perimeter defense going into the playoffs. Though he had been a starter for the majority of his career, Afflalo accepted a reserve role and seemed excited about the opportunity of playing for a Western Conference contender.

But the plan for Afflalo to play the role of super sub was dashed when starting shooting guard Wesley Matthews was lost for the season to a ruptured Achilles tendon. While it was fortuitous for Portland to have a starting-caliber guard in Afflalo, a player who shares some similarities to Matthews, already on the roster, the injury scuttled any real chance for a deep postseason run, which was the stated goal of the trade.

Afflalo started 19 games in place of Matthews but was limited late in the season after suffering a right shoulders strain. The injury kept Afflalo sidelined for the final three games of the regular season and the first two games of Portland’s first-round playoff series versus the Memphis Grizzlies. He played in the final three games of the series, albeit with limited effectiveness due to the injury.

Afflalo forgoing the final year of a five-year contract, originally signed with the Nuggets, was always the most likely scenario, though there was some speculation he might wait until the 2016 to hit free agency due to the expected jump in the salary cap. That approach, while potentially more lucrative, also caries significant risk, so it’s not surprising for Afflalo to seek a long-term contract sooner rather than later.

While Afflalo will be free to join with another team once free agents can sign on July 11, he could potentially sign a new contract with the Trail Blazers, as is the case with Matthews. CJ McCollum is the only shooting guard the Trail Blazers currently have under contract for the 2015-16 season.

Uncertain grounds

i love going back to the ford archives:

If I was a sports columnist, I'd take Durant too. If I'm wrong, and Greg Oden is Tim Duncan, I crack a joke about it and move on. If Kevin Pritchard is wrong, he's selling programs for the ABA Kansas City Knights.

Here's the analogy I use. Taking Kevin Durant is like dating a supermodel. She's hot. Everyone thinks you're cool for being next to her. For a few years everything is great. But when it's time to settle down, have kids, start a life ... she's eyeing younger guys. Partying late at night. Leaving you in the dust the next time a good thing comes along.
Taking Oden is like marrying the girl you don't want to date, but the girl you want to spend the rest of your life with. She's responsible. She looks out for you. She helps you be the best person you can be. She's not hot on the outside. But inside she makes your life worth living.

The teenage kid in Kevin Pritchard is in love with Durant. He'll be amazing. I really believe that. But if things go sour in Portland, he's also the most likely to pull a Kobe and demand to be in a big market like LA or Chicago.

The adult in Kevin Pritchard says that Oden is loyal. He makes everyone around him better. He wins championships (the kid has lost like 17 games his entire career) and at the end of the day -- the winning will be much sexier than the sizzle that Durant provides.

There are no wrong choices here. But Pritchard is an adult and I'm very, very confident Oden will be the No. 1 pick.

Bill: Chad, you're welcome -- just make sure the Sonics' trainer keeps putting in those one and a half inch lifts in Oden's left sneaker so his legs are the same size. Also, you might want to have him wear a splint during practice so he doesn't reinjure that bum wrist. Oh, and he's going to be nervous on Opening Night, for every Portland game and every playoff game -- just prescribe him a drug called Valerian, it calms the nerves and shouldn't affect his play too much. Good luck and congrats on getting the next Patrick Ewing.

Chad: So that's how we're going to roll? Pick No. 2 and you're already going to the mattresses? Why not throw a line in there about Greg Oden looking like Bill Russell's older brother while we're at it?

As long as Oden has five healthy fingers to put those championship rings on ... I can live with it.

Chad: I knew this was coming. You lose your mind with the Celtics.

1. Rick Carlisle is NOT an upgrade over Doc Rivers.
2. No way Minnesota takes Gerald Green and Theo Ratliff for KG. No way. You've lost it, haven't you?

Bill: Hey, NBA TV is showing the 1995 draft right now ... Milwaukee just took Gary Trent. I predict this ends badly.

Chad, it's a good thing you didn't have a column in 1995 -- George Zidek and Dragan Tarlac would have gone in the top 10.:mjlol:

Chad: Are we doing this again next year? You're going to love Kevin Love. He'll be the Adam Morrison of the 2008 NBA draft.

Bill: Of course we're doing this next year! I look forward to seeing what foreign big man you'll be supporting -- supposedly there's a 7-foot-1, 19-year-old South Korean who scored 120 points in a workout against a leather recliner last week. Keep an eye out for him.
