lol @ people comparing this to arrow... I say this as a fan of arrrow but its on the cw which makes it a bullshyt show... This feels like the real thing
In a nikka with no life move (I motherfukking LOVE Daredevil, what can I say), I took off from work to binge watch this shyt. Did not regret it whatsoever. Now that i've come down from the high of it, I feel like I can rate it fairly. I'm gonna go with a solid 8.5, perhaps 9/10 because i'm a fanboy. And that's a hard assessment against other legendary GOAT shows that I hold in high regard like The Shield, The Wire, Breaking Bad.
The potential that this show has to become truly regarded as one of the greats (based on the quality so far and the fact that this season BARELY mined any of the excellent source material that the character has under his belt) is off the charts. The tone of the show fits so fukking perfect, the actors are pretty damn good across the board --- stuff like the Frank Miller Hand/Elektra/Bullseye stuff, Born Again and Typhoid Mary... and that's before you even tap modern Bendis/Maleev stuff --- I salivate over the possibilities.
To get into some spoiler territory with both positives and negatives...
Just like everyone else, this was the moment I really knew the series meant business. I was at Comic-Con where they showed a lot of the Episode 1 stuff, so I never questioned the tone of the show. But I did wonder just how elaborate it was gonna get with the fights. An Oldboy/The Raid homage with a continuous shot? WHAT? My only issue here was that there really wasn't another fight that felt that good. Which isn't to say that the rest of the fights weren't cool, but I kept coming back to this particular scene when I thought of the best action scene.
And if episode 2 didn't let you know that this series was gonna molest all other superhero shows and go further than anything else in the MCU violence wise...this would do it for you. LOVE the Bowling Alley brawl, and the WTF/did that just happen effect of the suicide at the end. Crazy shyt.
I feel like the choreography kinda overrated. That doesn't mean it's bad. The punches and kicks are pulled really poorly and to compensate they use some kinda 1980's sounding contact effect that's kinda ridiculous.
This was the first time I questioned the series. The portrayal of Kingpin threw me off a bit, i'll be honest. I know D'Onofrio to be an excellent actor (Full Metal Jacket is a favorite), but he came off as stilted and awkward. Turns out that's exactly what they were going for. And they made the shyt WORK. He's a childlike, super vulnerable looking, out of control dude who is barely holding it together on the one hand. I was like "What's goin on...", and then by the end of ep 4, with that uncomfortable ass beheading its like oh yeah, this nikka is a killer.
By episode 8, I had come to a full understanding. Dude never fully grew out of that moment with his dad and is socially awkward...Vanessa essentially controls and focuses him (as it has been in the comics) and he becomes smarter and more calculated. Love the interpretation. It's much deeper than meets the eye, and being that the MCU is so straight forward with most characters and they have so much time to flesh him out in this series, i'll go as far as to say he's the richest character within the universe thus fatr.
The 3 "major" deaths irk me more as I think about them. Urich especially feels like such a fukking error. In the comics, Matt and Ben's friendship is an enduring thing that means a lot to the character. To take that potential off the table does not seem like a good idea. I mean, life will go on. But taking him off the board sucks.
Wesley's death irked me to a lesser extent. I had grown to love the way he and Fisk played off of one another and he was an awesome protagonist. I got an Owen from Gargoyles turned up to Mature Audience levels vibe. His demise provided some great development for Karen, but I hate that it had to be him.
Owl's apparent demise is another one that threw me off. I felt he also had a lot of potential, and hoped his little power move against Fisk resulted in him weaseling out for revenge to come later. But nope...we had to have Fisk kill him. Like he killed Ben. Wilson Fisk, just murdering characters I want to have stay around.
Fight scenes and cinematography notwithstanding the feel and story of the show reminded me a lot of the first season of Prison Break. Not the stuff with the prison of course but the stuff with the conspiracy, the shadow company in how they controlled almost everything and had so many people and the investigation into them. I can tell they modeled it off that, some of the characters were even very similar. Everything with Daredevil was on point; brutality, morality, action scenes, fight style relationship with Foggy. They didn't hold back.
Didn't think that I would end up like the supporting characters as much as I did. "The Owl"(Kingpin's financial adviser) had me every time he talked. All of them were very likeable including the villains. I was also surprised at how large Bill Ulrich's part was and ended up being. Kingpin's portrayal was a bit at first but then made sense towards the end, quite tragic. What they did with him reminded me of what they did with James Bond in Casino Royale. Where he was acting romantic and was about to quit his job until his woman died which sends him on a completely different path and changes the characters mentality. Essentially an origin.
The finale was good but felt rushed. Only problems for me were that the
red suit didn't look good at all compared to the ninja one and it felt very tacked on/forced in how he acquired it. The suit also feels too overpowered, he felt very vulnerable in the black suit which added extra tension.
Rosario Dawson's character seemed to just disappear. Which was strange as she was his main love interest at that point
Don't see how the next season if there is one isn't based on anything other than the born again storyline. Though I can see them fast tracking and sandwiching a standalone season 2 if's a big hit. Two years is a long time to ask people to wait. I'm hungry for more right now.
Regarding The Defenders show which is the team-up it looks like
The Hand will be the villains. Whatever they were trying to bring in sounded like a chemical weapon. That Madame Gao woman was also heavily hinted to be from where Iron Fist is from which is the Kunlun
The Kingpin is portrayed really well in my opinion. It's difficult to get him right from a character standpoint while making him somewhat believable in live action.
And supposedly the symbol on the heroin bags references the Steel Serpent, one of Iron Fist's main villains.
As a Marvel fan I'm loving this fukking show. And Daredevil isn't even one of my favorite Marvel heros. Hope Marvel makes more shows like these. A DD TV Show was a brilliant idea than a DD movie.
