5.79 million viewers for NFL Pro Bowl this year.

Wonder how many will tune in tonight for the All-Star game.
5.1 million for the NBA All-Star Game.

The signs are here that the NBA is heading the way of baseball, many of you already mentioned it. It is losing its general appeal, of course it's not going anywhere. But it could easily, easily be the next MLB within a decade in terms of popularity and cultural relevance...

The easiest fix would be the next Mega superstar coming in (Bird, Magic, Jordan, Bron levels), but they don't have this right now and are learning in real time apparently it isn't easy to find that kind of star. So without That Guy, they gotta put some real effort changing their trajectory because in a decade we could absolutely be talking about the NBA domestically the way we talk about MLB...

And yes, of course basketball would still be popular internationally, baseball is still popular internationally. But dudes aren't tripping, it's clear that NBA basketball is losing popularity domestically...

When there is no defense being played, and jacking up threes is the name of the game. Alot of people look like stars, which only makes the stars look less like stars:mjlol:

Giving offenses the edge by handicapping defenders, has actually helped the nfl . But its horrible for the nba in my opinion. Having more QBs look like stars works because only one guy is playing QB at a time on a team. And QB duels sell the game like star vs star used to sell the nba. But when you got so many guys putting up 40 regularly, putting up 70 now:comeon:?

It muddys the water and dims the star power of guys who would be like that, even if defense was still being played. And just get rid of the 3 point shot. You can shoot it from there, but its still two. It just gives you the advantage,as no one would expect you to shoot from half court if its only worth 2 points. Chances are you will be wide open if you camp back there:mjgrin:

Yup. Like I said in the other thread these QB's can absolutely go nuclear and dominate the game like a Luka, Jokic, etc. Dropping dots from the pocket, scrambling for yards, playmaking on the run throwing dimes, etc. They can completely become a team's offense.

The difference however is fans respect it because those QB's can get clapped by a defender(s). Sure there are flags, but big hits are big hits and the rulebook doesn't make a QB immune from getting smacked. You can have 32 great QB's but the question will always be which team can keep their QB healthy by season's end.

Then you look at NBA players dropping step back threes, skipping around traveling/carrying everywhere but on top of that they get whistles for getting "tapped" on the wrist because and whistles for initiating contact, etc. Then there's load management and it makes people not want to watch.

You comparing the NBA to hip hop :unimpressed:

Look I got some issues with the state of the league my damn self, but it's not even remotely close to dying.

Im just pointing out the fact that a bunch of money coming doesnt always spell the future is bright. Sometimes its just one final desperation cash grab by everyone at the top before everything implodes:francis:

And sometimes the implosion happens because you were giving out money like candy to any and everybody.

I get where you're coming from, but we'll just have to agree to disagree. The league was actually in trouble decades ago with players on coke, low attendance, and playoff games shown at midnight on tape delay. Then Stern, Magic, and Bird came and they haven't stopped since. They're literally too big to fail now flaws included. Bigger TV deal on the horizon, more bread, expansion incoming, bigger footprint overseas, etc.

In baseball, the defending cy young winner and two top 20 hitters are still free agents 5-6 weeks before the season starts partially due to Bally sports going into bankruptcy and quarter of team revenues being in flux. If that affects baseball finances of course it affects the NBA as well. NBA gonna sign the new tv deal but it won’t be close to 75B and it’s gonna be the last deal ever that’s gonna rely on the old model (raising cable rates). They’re going to need people like you and I to pay more for these regular season and all star games to bridge that gap. Are you? I see where he was coming from when it came to hip hop because there were posts on SOHH 20 years ago saying exactly what was gonna happen to it. NBA isn’t going to die but can it decline post Lebron and Steph like the NHL did post Wayne and Mario? YES
