Well, see...the thing is...

If you're going to use the Spurs overall defensive metrics against Wemby, you're going to come to that errant conclusion.

There's a difference between the Spurs defense, and the Spurs defense when Wemby is on the floor.
And that's what some voters and many analysts take into account if they're giving their opinion on defensive value.

SPURS ARE THE 12TH SEED.

GOAL POSTS ARE BEING REPOSITIONED

I know he’s had an injury history, but AD has only finished 2nd in DPOY once. We all know Rudy Gobert shouldn’t have 4 DPOY awards, AD has also only made All Defense 1st team 3x. DeAndre Jordan made it one year over him :patrice:

They let Rudy Gobert win it when he essentially only plays 1 side of the ball for real. AD is a real 2 way player. shyt is disgraceful. He should have like 2-3 of them by now. Even Marcus Smart has one smh
Because it’s defensive player of the year, not best 2 way player.

If you would like the league to introduce that, have at it.

IT ADDRESSES EVERYTHING
UNLESS YOURE SAYING WEMBY
SHOULDN'T BE JUDGED FOR TEAM RECORD

If you're going to judge a player's defensive value, you have to judge how he impacts the defense when he's on the floor.

You can't take a broad view of something like team record because it misses so many things to give a proper context.

The same way Michael Jordan had tremendous offensive value even when his team's record wasn't very impressive in the 1980s.

The NBA is the only league where everyone’s so paranoid about someone stacking up awards when it’s a year to year award. If you happened to be the best at something that year, so be it, but too many heads are like “but how will this make his legacy look like?!?” Make up awards, nah it’s his turn, when all anyone should do is reflect how that year went.

yes the spurs are only 18th in defensive rating at 114.6, their defensive rating when wemby is on the floor 112.5, off the floor 118.9. the lakers are 20th at 114.9, when ad is on the floor defensive rating is 114.4, off the floor 116.2.

as for why giannis won the dpoy in 19-20, they had the no.1 defense rating as a team at 102.9 and with giannis on the floor 99.6, off the floor 107.5.

17-18 is the year i'd probably make the case for ad winning dpoy. he had the stats and the best on/off impact. what i think worked against him was the pelicans only having the 14th ranked defensive rating. games played were heavily in his favor. he played 75, gobert 56, embiid 63.

i dont agree that its narrative driven but there does seem to be a push to give last years runner up a leg up if the voters feel hes worthy the next year. draymond 2nd in 15-16, dpoy 16-17. gobert 2nd 16-17, dpoy 17-18. giannis 2nd 18-19, dpoy 19-20. last year wemby 2nd. i also dont think with wemby its as much narrative as it is his status and his physical stature that enhances his case consciously or otherwise.

Can you run dem numbers for the rest of the Laker starters? I wanna see something :lupe:

Maybe run the lytics with a certain traffic cone off the court too :lupe:

And DPOY might be the most subjective award. I’d bet the players disagree with that award more than any other. Players know who give them a tough matchup. The media sometimes can’t decide if they want to award a player who’s putting up great stats, a player who’s the best defender on a good defensive team, or they look at analytics.

:gucci: sabonis is smaller than davis and bullies him every game
I thought Sabonis was 7ft. Either way, those weights haven’t been updated since forever. Do we really believe Bam Adebayo weighs less than Giannis? Or that Giannis weighs 2lbs more than KD?
