Also the pimp and brothel keeper and the other guy at the end were all supposed to be black originally but Martin changed it thinking it would be too much and cause division and riots etc.

The above paragraph just shows that Travis was supposed to be an outwardly character but they changed up the script and made it more subtle.

Paul Schrader, the screenwriter, stated officially that Travis Bickle was a character. Don't even know why people try to get around it.

Except he says Travis only shoots white people which is incorrect because the first person he shoots is a black man robbing the bodega.
