CBR:

Less than a month into its release and the prehistoric shark film The Meg has already outperformed Solo: A Star Wars Story at the worldwide box office.

The Jason Statham-starring shark movie, which opened in early August, has earned over $412.79 million globally while the latest Star Wars film, which opened this past May, earned over $392.63 million at the box office during its lifetime run.

The biggest factor with the underwater monster movie overtaking the Star Wars anthology film comes down to foreign box office. As a Chinese co-production, The Meg has been a runaway success in its home country, a region which Star Wars has failed to make a serious impact commercially so far.

Overseas, Solo barely made $179 million at the box office whereas The Meg has already made $306.5 million…and counting.

Hopefully, Solo will find a larger audience when it arrives on home video in exactly two weeks while, in the meantime, The Meg has bowed only to the box office might of Crazy Rich Asians.

In theaters nationwide, director Jon Turteltaub’s The Meg stars Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Masi Oka, Cliff Curtis, Page Kennedy, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, and Rainn Wilson.

Directed by Ron Howard, Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, Joonas Suotamo, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Paul Bettany, and Woody Harrelson. The film is scheduled to arrive on digital HD/UHD on September 14 with a Blu-ray release on September 25.

:wow:

its over for that franchise, the special effects for those movies were amazing in 1975 but that was 40 years ago. They clearly only brought this franchise back for money thinking nostalgia would keep these movies on par with marvel. but now that people see they really don't have anything to add to the story, they have moved on.

They need to scrap any and all prequels they had planned and try to get back to what made these movies popular in the first place, interesting story and great action scenes, the obvious feminist agenda wont work with this movie they need to scrap that storyline too. It wasn't women that kept the star wars franchise alive for 40 years, I'm just saying..

Also let the black dude get some real shine, they are wasting him and find another Luke, these movies have no real hero to root for..

I’ll say it once and say it again
People want to see fukking jedi’s That is the ONE singular thing that makes Star Wars completely unique from any other Sci-fi series. And the lore has more than enough material to provide some truly epic films

Where they really fukked up with that in my opinion is not introducing the new Jedi academy Luke started in the books (han’s son turned to the dark in that too so I know they took that material) that was quite an epic, entertaining, and informative series in the story

So you pay a billion dollars for something and you are saying so 9 should be the last. You must be a terrible bussines man

There was always suppose to be 9 Star Wars films. Lucas between being too old and the criticism of the ep 1-3, wanted the last 3 films made, but he couldn't make them, Disney could do that. But they've diluted the brand so bad, it needs to chill for a bit, let the dust settle.

It's horrific business for a budgeted film of 275m, make less than 400m. With them numbers you suppose to at a bare minimum, make double what the budget is.

And considering that the least grossing Marvel film still made 500m+ this year. And that is still double it's budget of 160m+

Sunken cost fallacy. They killed the franchise with ep. 9. They need to wait a couple of years and then reboot the universe, otherwise the movies will continue to flop.

So you pay a billion dollars for something and make only one movie.

Movies are a bussines at the end of the day.
