I know Dylan is supposed to be one of the greatest songwriters ever and an inspiration to a generation but I have not been able to roll with him in the past.

I tried again though for the sake of the music club thinking this album might be different. But umm.... Couldn't get thru it. His sound is not for me at all. I'm sure I am missing out on some level of genius. Maybe my ears will mature at a later date. :yeshrug: Hope I am the exception and the rest of you really enjoyed it.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. He's from my home state, so I feel like I should have some sort of allegiance to him. But I've never been able to get into his music. Maybe someday.

Sorry brehs, I'm not getting notifications on this thread anymore...wtf. I'll update OP with the second album, and someone pick a third.

I'm going to give both a full listen at work tomorrow, I got thru part of Blocc party and enjoyed it, but midway through it gave me a Foster The People vibe so I threw that on instead :guilty:

This club is making me realize how little I really know about rock music. :sadcam:. I feel like any album I choose will be too commercial and will be quickly greeted with a bunch of :stopitslime: :beli:  responses. Probably over thinking it just a bit.

i'm in the same boat...lol. but this thread isn't just about rock, it should be also about celebrated ALBUMS that a lot of us probably haven't taken the time to listen to - like jazz, blues, soul, 80's hip hop, etc.

Thoughts on Blocc Party:

  • Vocally, they kind of have this mashup sound that's a mix of Billie Armstrong (Green Day) and Brendon Urie (Panic @ the Disco)...and sometimes a few inflection styles similar to Fred Durst. I hate to start a album from an artist I never heard before by immediately comparing them to others, but, IMO, that's exactly the lane they occupy - typical indie band, good enough, but no breakout potential IMO
  • I ended up liking their slower tracks [Blue Light, Modern Love, So Here We Are - I really liked this song, and Compliments] better as I felt the vocals improved and these songs didn't sound like and have the generic tempo of many other Indie Rock songs/bands.
  • The drums on Pioneers caught me :noah:
  • "Luno" immediately made me think of "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" :beli:
  • "Positive Tension" that bass line was nice, but it was outta Flea's (RHCP) playbook
Overall, the album was ok, I wouldn't add it to my rotation to listen to on its own, but I would incorporate songs from it onto a indie playlist

Thoughts on Bob Dylan:
  • This is coffee shop music :heh: I honestly can't see a place in my life for music like this other than rainy day stuck inside cleaning up the house or faux intellectualism at Starbucks moments lol
  • that said, i like his storytelling style in his songs, i especially enjoyed the way "Ballad of Frankie Lee & Judas Priest" was structured/orchestrated. I'd like to see this style in R&B, it could be quite interesting, hip hop already has people who do it well (Nas)
  • This was my first time actively listening to Bob Dylan (I've probably heard things in passing)...thanks for the exposure, doubt I'll check for more of him, but at least I have some talking points :ehh:

I've never heard this before, thanks for posting it. This is fantastic. When I started listening, I was thinking it had kind of a Curtis Mayfield type feel to it. I looked up the album on Wikipedia and sure enough, Curtis Mayfield had a hand in producing it. This one is a keeper.

I found this album at my local library a few years ago. The cover art caught my eye so I decided to give it a spin.

Bliss! The band rocks from start to end. The horns :ohlawd:, flutes :jawalrus:, and drums :whew: are on point.

I actually like the 2 instrumental songs best, One Dragon Two Dragon and Mama Get Yourself Together, but I'm just on instrumentals these days. The Change Is Gonna Come and California Dreamin covers are very good as well.

Crazy thing is that this is the only album Baby Huey recorded because he died shortly after these tracks were recorded. So this is the only gem available. Also explains why many have never heard of it. Couldn't do a promotional tour.

Hope ya'll enjoyed it. Who's up next?? :ohhh:
