So I started my Electrician apprenticeship in March. Love this fukking job. Doing well in school too, and my final is this next Thursday. Driving home from work get a call from my company’s president asking me if I’d be willing to go with some of the other guys I’ve been working with to Indiana for 3 weeks to help build a new Amazon site. When I picked up the phone I could tell he was in a meeting with the project managers because I heard them talking in the background saying, “Just call Mike” and someone else said “I’ll get Michael on the phone” right before the guy who called me said he was already talking to me.

It’s weird working in construction where I am being the only black guy in our company. Every now and then I’ll see another black guy on a job site but not typically. But I’m actually more surprised by how quickly the word in the company has gotten around that I’m a quick learner and I get shyt done. I’ve had a really good week of work and knowing that they want me to go out there on this big Amazon job was the icing on the cake.

The main reason why I hesistared leaving my previous dead end job was because I was comfortable. I wasn’t struggling to make ends meet. I wasn’t scraping by for meals. But I was very very unhappy, despite being comfortable. Y’all, there’s a lot worse shyt in this world than being momentarily uncomfortable. I haven’t been happy in years. But I am now. It’s remarkable.
