What’s a basement?

A lot of homes are just one level

My grandma and her sister, my mom, her sisters and brothers all lived in a multi family house that my grandma/grandfather bought way back when - one family per floor. Interesting that different cities on both coasts have different aesthetics for housing with NYC being a condensed city and more crowded with less Solitary standing homes - building homes to pack as many people in and the concept of co-ops and what not
