In the UK I've never heard of anyone getting paid fortnightly unless they do some kind of manual labour.

Wow, I didn't realize that. I've always been paid bi-weekly both for salaried and contractual positions. I have friends that work in government and they get paid the 15th and 30th or 1st and 15th...something like that, but it's twice a month.
