Which branch of the military were you considering? This is tough. I'm leaning more toward you going to the military, just because I feel the experience is invaluable. I don't know how strict the military is, but I'm sure you could keep up with the carpentry industry and turbines via news articles or something and revisit it when/if you become a civilian. Rape the government for everything they are going to give you by enlisting because as a single non-military person, you're going getting fukked in taxes.
I thin once you're out of the military, it would be easier as a veteran to gain access to the network and capital it would take to grown your carpentry business like you desire. You said you don't really like it so you may find interest in something else while in the service. Not the Army though, they suck and they will probably send you somewhere to blow up innocent children.[/spoiler]
