This movie was just....blah. Saw it earlier today and the more I think about it the less I like it. If i want to watch the “Lion King” I’ll just watch the original.
On paper, the cast and crew looked great. Visually it’s and the music is still
But the execution of it was just
James Earl Jones sounded like he was going through the motions re-reading his lines as Mufasa. Donald Glover sounded zooted out his mind when he was playing Simba. And Beyonce sounded like she was reading from the script and not ACTING if that makes sense.
However the main highlights was Seth Rohan and Billy Eichner as Timon and Pumbaa. Chiwetel Ejiofor was great as Scar, he was a nice successor to Jeremy Irons. And the hyenas were cool. Other then that..its a naw from me.
The “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” scene taking place during the day
The stampede looked trash compared to the animated version. And I know it’s little shyt but that was so GRAND and epically suspenseful that they could have done MORE with that. Simba could have easily moved to the side during that shyt and survivors that.
Taking out THIS fukkING MOMENT WAS IDOTIC AS fukk!
That moment was such a crucial moment for Simba to realize his growth and is lowkey the key plot point for the character. Instead for the remake, after Simba sees Mufasa’s ghost in the thunder clouds (which you barely see btw), Simba goes “You know what? You right..”
Even the ending, Simba roars too damn early before the finale music hits its peak. YOU COULDNT EVEN GET THAT RIGHT?!
Disappointing
This was one spectacular misfire, goddamn...
One thing that stood out to me that added to the cold, lifeless atmosphere of the movie were the completely absent sound effects. I swear most scenes are dead silent outside of characters talking and a background soundtrack, like they didn't even bother to give sound effects to animals walking, wind blowing against trees, flowing water, etc. It doesn't help that the editing is a complete mess, probably a result of copying so many scenes without being able to capture the liveliness and flow.
Also, it is a tight contest between Donald Glover's singing and Beyoncé's acting as the absolute worst part of the movie. Glover's singing voice is so flat and weak that you can barely hear him on Can You Feel The Love Tonight and on top of that is also wildly out of tune with Beyoncé.
The crazy thing is that in the OG they decided to not let Timon and Pumbaa sing the song because they felt the characters were too goofy for the song, yet here Billy Eichner (Timon) sets in the song so strongly that you desperately wish they had let him sing it all once you hear the first notes Glover hits.
Beyoncé meanwhile has never been a good actress, but her line reading here sounds like she is trying way too hard to pronounce words clearly, putting weird emphasis on all the wrong words.
I don't know how they got all this stuff so terribly wrong, especially because Favreau seemed to get things right with The Jungle Book, but this is an embarrassing failure that only has any positive things to it because of the simple fact that the source material is just so unfukkwithably strong.
We aren't reviewing the original though, and they had every opportunity to make improvements or get a better singer instead of Glover. They made the choices they did for this remake and we can judge them. We certainly don't have to excuse shyt because of things that may have been the same in the original.I wonder if all the people criticizing Glovers singing even remember the original grown up simbas singing, he never sounded good lol. It’s like people want perfect vocals for something that originally wasn’t that great. Not only that but the original simba never sung the bridge or chorus on the original “can you feel the love”, neither did Nala, after their short verses someone else’s vocals took over, so Glover shouldn’t be catching heat for that either.
There are far more genuine complaints than the lack of emotion such as the piss poor editing (some of the early scenes, especially ones with Zazu talking, end so awkward and flow so poorly into the next it is embarrassing) and utter lack of decent sound design. This can personally guarantee you if people watch the live action one and then go watch the animated version right now a lot of the complains will die down. People are making nostalgia get in their way of this movie. The only "real" complaint that's legit is the lack of emotion on their faces.
The movie wasn't bad at all
@sanityovar8tedBeyonce's reading was no bueno
This actually pissed me off. Like why? Biggest song misfire had to be Be Prepared. Holy shyt, that was bad.'Can You Feel The Love Tonight' taking place in broad daylight
Not gonna say it was trash, should have got Hugo Weaving or Idris Elba for Scar...
Hyenas were piff....
The opening scene alone was a top cinematic moment for me period, just stunning.....
But....the voice acting for the leads were too trash....even OG JEJ sounded fatigued (but I won't judge too harsh, Breh is almost 100 and putting in work)....
Beyonce was hooked on phonics and Glover didn't have enough conviction in his voice to be a Simba....
It was the uncanny valley for me as the animals didn't show emotions so when we can't pick up cues on how another being feels, we are unable to connect with them....
