I've got a theory. In the old Zelda's Ganon got trapped in the Sacred Land, he corrupted it and it became a Cursed Land. I think Rauru and the Zonai are ancient Hylians that were trapped in the Cursed Land. I only developed this theory after seeing a lightskinned Hylia in the leaked artwork and now a darkskinned Hylia in the new trailer.

In the old games, in the cursed land, regular humans that were trapped there turned into creatures. That's why Ganon turns into a beast and at some point and probably why the ancient Hylians look like goats. Basically, I think the Zonai are not a separate race but cursed Ancient Hylians.

Me personally, I think the tear-shaped gem thing they got going on allow them to do some time-travel shenanigans, and it might be what will bring Ganondorf to tiptop shape. Seems like the recall ability would be utilizing such a tear gem, and Zelda, Gnaondorf, as well as the being that look like he could be Zonai deity/ruler, all got one.
