bobbityhobbity:

The scenes between Toph and Korra this week reminded me a lot of Toph’s scene with Iroh from “The Chase,” and I feel that Toph’s mentorship style borrows from Iroh quite a lot (and Iroh has been very helpful to Korra in their encounters).

Toph understands the value of independence, of not wanting to be pitied. And her independence and autonomy were never things Toph was required to relinquish. Rather, she needed to bring it into balance by seeing the value of interdependence.

Toph manages to teach this lesson to Korra - the importance of staying connected to others - while still respecting Korra’s need to come to a lot of those answers in her own time. And this is precisely what Iroh does for Zuko. Like Iroh, Toph is there when Korra really needs her (after she encounters those visions in the swamp) but otherwise, her approach is hands off.
