I think one thing we can all agree on, is “Subvert Expectations” is really a thing that keeps really fukking up great franchises, GOT, Star Wars, shyt I would of said the same about the FF7 Remakes ending if they didn’t get everything else so spot on, again, I’m not judging this game like that until I play it since they usually get everything right, but with that said just from the small amount I do know..
let’s say the plot of this game is Ellie living a relatively Stabilised life in their settlement along with Joel, Early-ish in the game on a supply run Joel is Murdered, and Ellie embarks on a journey to kill them all, you play the whole game as Ellie and wipe out the entire crew that killed your surrogate father.....when they said it’s a story of revenge I think most Fans, myself included assumed the story would go something like that...pretty generic, cliche & predictable right? Fans still would of loved it as long as the writing was still on par with the first game, because guess what? the premise of the first games plot was also extremely cliche & unoriginal, But it’s what they did with its characters & writing within that story.
not sure why all of a sudden these Movie/show/game creators seem to be on this wave off going as far left field as possible and potentially angering a fan base because they want to be overly different or shocking instead of just giving fans what they expect and love you for, it Doesn't make you any less of a writer for giving fans what they wanna see, and it doesn't make you a genius for doing the opposite either.
