Now that I've calmed down and thought about it some more. It wasn't that bad. Putting myself in Ellie's and Abby's shoes, I can understand the ending. Not everything has to be some super dramatic cliff hanger or big set piece. Like I said, playing through the game was a cool experience and I enjoyed the game overall. It was still a decent game, but nothing compared to the first one. It was impossible to follow up, even for Naughty Gawds.
I still don't know where the story goes from here if they make another one
I managed to get over my initial malaise by playing with the settings until I found a style that worked for me. Turned on navigation so no more having to search a barely lit room for a crevice to crawl through. Made ammo plentiful. Turned on slow motion while aiming. Made it easy to skip the skirmishes I don't give a fukk about. Experience got a lot better after that. One thing I'll appreciate about TLOU2 is the freedom they gave you to adjust your experience. Literally no reason to be frustrated with the combat itself.
Other issues I had with the narrative remained until the end. The themes are fairly straightforward, beaten over your head and there's not really much to debate about it which doesn't make for very interesting discussion if both sides are being fair.
but, I will say the ending was striking. Seeing
Abby go from a she-hulk to a withered away, desperate vagabond was tough. Spent all that time fukking people up with my bare fists only to turn into that. Kinda hit me to see it.
For all the bytching about Abby going in, she felt great to control in this game. Even more so than Ellie. Just wish there the ideas around her character and her relationships were better, more fleshed out. And that this game used the characters as a vehicle for something more than just X theme.
Probably not doing a 2nd playthrough, since the story is what I was most interested in getting through with gameplay being ancillary to that. Will be watching streamers play it though just to see their reactions.
The more I reflect back and think about it, the more the story grows on me. I'm satisfied with the ending. Rollercoaster of emotions had me messed up That's what a good story does to you

The fact that it had you thinking about it and appreciating it after... I think that's what all great endings are supposed to do. The ones that make you think.
