Before the series:

2020 WCF series matchups:

Jokic (offense) v. Dwight - 20 mins total matchup, 50% FG (8-16), 12 earned FTs
Jokic (offense) v. AD - 11 mins total matchup, 58 FG% (11-19), 6 earned FTs
Jokic (offense) v. McGee - 6 mins total matchup, 46 FG% (7-15), 0 earned FTs.

AD was food. I still remember Jokic backing him down from the 3-pt line to the hoop like he wasn't even there on a go-ahead bucket in Game 2.

Dwight only had marginal success because he fouled the shyt out of him and got in his head. Jokic's body got burned up having to battle against the three of them and it eventually drained him. That was the best defensive frontcourt rotation in recent memory. Now the Lakers only have AD left (who's in a worse physical state than he was back then), which leaves them at a massive disadvantage.

Another important factor is that the Lakers had the benefit of being in The Bubble during that series. They won't have that here.

AD, Dwight and JaVale could rest up to maximum effect and use their combined forces against Jokic. Now, AD and the Lakers are gonna have to travel to Denver and play in a higher altitude (one of the many things I've reiterated in here during this series as being a key differentiator), which I'm sure you know as well as anyone being a fan of this team and how much of an advantage that is.

I don't think this can be emphasized enough.

AD having to be the primary defender on Jokic all series long took the sting out of his offense. He had the luxury of having Dwight and JaVale soak up defensive possessions on Jokic back in 2020, which inevitably wore Jokic out (with all that banging down low and competing on the glass). That series during the Bubble allowed AD to exert maximum effort on offense. Now with this 2023 series being 1v1 and without any defensive big man help, he just didn't have the same impact. I told folks at the time this was the case when they were falling over themselves to crown AD after that series.

Playing in the attitude, dealing with the travel and having to go mano a mano with Jokic simply proved too much for him.

We've gone from moral victories after Game 1 of the Lakers figuring them out, to now after they got swept to "had the Lakers won...".

Even in such comprehensive defeat, nxggas still gotta make it about the Lakers. This is why it's for the greater good they didn't make the Finals. It'll would've allowed Causals to distort NBA discourse even more than they already had. Folks didn't even bother to watch Nuggets game this season (hence the obliviousness to how well Jokic had played and the opposition to his MVP campaign) and it's the reason why they convinced themselves that the Lakers were the protagonist in this series.

Even as someone who didn't think the Heat would make it this far, I'm glad the Finals will be between two teams who everyone overlooked.
