You gotta remember Berry's Motown formula literally CREATED legends. its hard to let go of a winning formula and "trust" five kids you've groomed since they were 11-17 to write and produce their own material. The thing is this though, Berry underestimated the EXACT thing that Joe directly told the boys in that scene by the pool (a conversation which took place in real life) That Joe had groomed them to be professionals since before they ever signed with Motown. Michael's prodigious talent had Smokey Robinson and Jackie Wilson amazed when he was 12. Tito and Jermaine were professional level guitar players by 16-17. They KNEW music in and out, hell Randy, the youngest brother who wasn't even originally part of the group, co-wrote Shake Your Body with Michael, which was a top ten hit.
