Alabama didn't win the SEC and their reward was to play LSU again

The point of conferences was to have a group of schools to compete against athletically that were located close geographically to reduce travel expenses.

Nothing to do with determining a national champion of anything.

Yes it does, every pro sports has the conference champions face each other for the championship. Each conference is self contained and play each other. The playoffs should be designed for champions from different areas to face each other for the national champion.
