They’re definitely setting up to try to. Would set a TERRIBLE precedent though.

A perfect world for them would just be SMU knocking off Clemson on Saturday.
Precedent would be, why even play in the conference title game if you can lose and get bumped out of the playoffs while a team not playing gets bumped up. I can’t imagine they would set that precedent in the first year of this format. We’ll see, but that would be crazy work.

Because SMU should still be playing their way in

But after 12 regular season games, the committee has SMU three spots ahead of Alabama. Whether you think SMU “should” be behind and playing their way in doesn’t matter when the committee already said SMU is ahead. How would they work retroactively to punish SMU now?

There’s no retroactive. Their season isn’t finished

SMF and LAX to VA and NC
It’s bogus because the 5th seed is the best seed to get due to this wonky bracket they set up.
They gotta change the seeding format. Conference champions should be automatic, like division winners in the NFL. Then the remaining spots go to the best of the rest...
The way I see it, the following schools are in the playoff regardless of outcome this weekend:

Oregon
Texas
Penn State
Notre Dame
Georgia
Ohio State
Tennessee
Indiana

Four Big 10 teams are locked in; three SEC teams are locked in; and one independent...

So there's really only four spots up for debate. Winner of Big 12, winner of ACC, winner of Mountain West, and one other bid. So it'll be one Big 12, one ACC, one Mountain West, locked in...

Which means, either Iowa State or Arizona State is in; either Clemson or SMU is in; either UNLV or Boise is in; and............Alabama 🤣

The committee is gonna have to choose between letting in Alabama, or one of the losers of the three above conference championships, or another fringe team like Miami, Ole Miss, or South Carolina...

Alabama is ranked ahead of all those fringe teams currently, it won't magically be behind them next week. The real question will be, if SMU loses, do they get in over Bama. Because if SMU wins Bama is a lock...

That's what this really comes down to. If SMU wins we have it set. If SMU loses who do you pick (I'd take SMU)...

Not really a fan of the playoff basically being a Big 10/SEC invitational, nor am I a fan of conference championship games. But I like the 12 team playoff...
I'm right on my first of 4 scenarios. Boise is in...

nikkas never wanna salute when I'm right so let me pat my own back here for a second!

Teams that were already in, that didn't change today regardless:

Oregon (13-0)
Texas (11-2)
Penn State (11-2)
Notre Dame (11-1)
Georgia (11-2)
Ohio State (10-2)
Tennessee (10-2)
Indiana (11-1)

Conference champions that clinched today:

Boise State (12-1)
Arizona State (11-2)
Clemson (10-3)

There is only one spot up for grabs: 11-2 SMU or 9-3 Alabama...

You've got a 3-loss Clemson team in the field that is not as good as Alabama, but are in for winning the conference championship game. SMU picked the wrong day to start slow, because losing to Clemson who'll probably get dogwalked by an SEC or B1G school, is a bad, bad look for them...

SMU's only real win is over BYU 3 months ago...

As a fan of neither team, I'm cool with Bama or SMU getting in, not pissed at either being left out. But SMU knew they needed the W today, it was a great comeback but this was such a weak start to the game, better teams than Clemson would bury these guys....

Coin flip decision...

This isn't a correct statement though. The committee had SMU ranked well ahead of Alabama coming into this weekend and they said all along that a loss in a conference title game would not hurt a team that was ranked ahead of a team that's sitting at home because they want title games to matter.

If they had SMU ahead of Bama last week, then it shouldn't change with a 3-point loss on a 56-yard FG.

If they select Alabama it's because of money and nothing else.

I bet the committee boosts up Clemson for beating a top 10 team (while still punishing said top 10 team) and we get a bracket that looks something like this

1 Oregon
2 Georgia
3 Boise St
4 Clemson

5 Texas
6 Notre Dame
7 Ohio State
8 Penn State
9 Tennessee
10 Indiana
11 Arizona State
12 SMU/Alabama

Yep, this was the worst result for Alabama if SMU lost. They needed SMU to get blown out. SMU outgained Clemson by 130 yards. Buzzer beating 56 yard field goal. SMU is solidly in.

Exactly. They passed the eye test by losing in that fashion.

Should be tears in Alabama later today
