Its not just conference champions in the bye positions for any other football tournament (or any other NCAA tournament) to answer your question. In EVERY other sport, they get the best teams in there, and then rank them accordingly. So #15 wont get a bye while #2 or #3 doesnt. So that makes all of what you said moot.

Yeah, well ... this is only a big deal because the P4 thought none of the others would ever catch up in any season. This was supposed to be their way of cementing themselves but a couple of teams dropped the ball.

The committee says it is possible and that is all that matters.

They will drop SMU below Alabama and tell you it was for football reasons.

Put no stock into what they say in the post rankings release press conference. What the spokesperson says in these press conferences and what the committee does isn’t always the same thing. Watch what they do. Matching up teams after the regular season, they have SMU three spots ahead. Alabama about to be chillin on Saturday. No way they move ahead three spots after not playing a game. I think the conference championship games are additional data points for top 4 seeding but not to be used as a punitive metric. If that was the case, we should be ahead of Pedo St. if they lose to Oregon since we’d both have two losses and we beat Pedo at their place. But I don’t think that will happen.

Nah, the top 4 teams in the country will NEVER be the #1-#4 seeds, cause the major teams are stacked in the Big 10 and SEC. So that means the #4 seed in the tourney will always be in the #6-#12 range at best.

And the #5 seed will always be the best non-champ, probably ranked in the #3-#6 range. So that tourney #5 seed will ALWAYS get the worst conference champ, and then the worst team with the bye. Meanwhile the #1 seed/#1 in the nation will always get the #8/#9 seed winner (which will be teams in the #6-#10 range in the rankings.

That needs to be adjusted ASAP

Is it true that Notre Dame can never be higher than 5 because they can't win a conference championship?

Edit
I chat gptd it while I was on the toilet

Under CFP rules, the top-four seeds in the playoff will go to the highest-ranked conference champions, and since Notre Dame is not in a conference, the highest seed they can get is the No. 5 seed, which would mean they’d host a playoff game on either Dec. 20 or 21 in South Bend.

Yeah, not seeing how Alabama makes it in even if SMU loses. At the end of the regular season, the committee has SMU 8th and Alabama 11th. There’s no way the committee punishes SMU 3 spots for losing a conference title game while Alabama is at home. I think the playoff field is pretty set other than Clemson being in if they win or flIp Boise St and UNLV based on whoever wins that game.

And some people said Notre Dame was dumb to agree to this system.
:pachaha:

They can lose 1 game every year and still be in contention for that 5 seed to get the weakest team in round 1 and the 4thbest conference champ in round 2.

And we see the selection committee already admitting that they'll use conference championship games for and against certain teams, so they removed themselves from that fukkery.

And since they're a big brand, they're very likely in with a 2 loss season and probably still in contention with a 3 loss season.

If you’re comparing them shoehorning Alabama in last year, at least they played a game beating Georgia for the SEC championship. I thought putting them in over FSU was highway robbery. But you think they get in this year simply by punishing another team for playing a conference title game that Alabama couldn’t play themselves?

They’re definitely setting up to try to. Would set a TERRIBLE precedent though.

A perfect world for them would just be SMU knocking off Clemson on Saturday.

Miami shytty defense cost them

:mjcry::mjcry:Hard being a fan of this team man...They had EVERYTHING in front of them. A one-in-a generation QB1 and an offense that was firing all year. Defense couldn't bother to show up just a LITTLE BIT...disgusting. Now we stuck with nothing AND Mario "coaching"

ANY other team, 10-2 is a GREAT season...it feels so hollow with this team, sad because it shouldn't.

The chair is already going back on what he said after these rankings were released. SMU is positioned IN FRONT of Indiana and they've said that the extra game wouldn't hurt anyone.

Now, all of sudden... he's saying that SMU could fall out of the playoff if they lose.

It's just ridiculous. Why can't they just fess up and say it's about the money? They want as many SEC teams as possible... just tell the public that's what you want, you look foolish
