Finally saw the first ep and...it was kind of good? There are issues but that was a nice first episode. You can really tell why certain people are mad about the first twenty minutes or so. To me that only "works" as a parody. The writing is so on the nose there's no other way to react. The nudity rider, Jos giving approval, the intimacy coach getting locked in a bathroom, the nonstop "Finklestein" utterances. It felt like the scenes in True Romance with the (presumably Jewish) producer.
Like this real "wink wink nod nod" vibe that clearly angered Twitter's pop culture folks.
My only issue with the episode was Tedros' intro. That felt like this sleazy club DJ thing that didn't really fit his next couple scenes. This is supposed to be this imposing guy, seemingly setting the stage to manipulate a rich popstar. Especially in the way he shows up at the house's security gate looking like fukking Batman lol. Prob would have needed a much better actor to pull it off but IMO he should have been a force of nature in the club, compelling Jos to come to him, not the other way around.
it only works as parody/satire, and it is a mess of a show, just due to the behind the scenes issues, so there is some tonal contrasts that feel off, no amount of satirical aspirations change the flat writing in some spots, or Weeknd's acting. He just doesn't have it. And the worst ideas feel like his worst music video epics.
it's bret easton ellis lite, who is way heavier on the vioence/sex/drugs, this is pretty easy watch
and it is a lot of fun on that level. People expecting prestige drama/or worse people apart of the showing selling it as such, have misjudged it.
The closest thing to it, that isn't Ellis, is
The Neon Demon. It should have probably been a lot better, like a bloodier psych thriller, with real stakes, and some satire, but it was a fun watch, if I wasn't a fan of the music, it would drop a whole grade.
