Well what I will say, this may not have been a “good” show. But it was bad in a very entertaining way. It’s obvious that the real episode #5 got clipped. The whole Rob story, Diane story, hell even Xander were just undercooked. I like the lil cult talent but spending what felt like majority of finale on their showcase was just meh.
Weeknd was bad in the first 2 episodes but was pretty solid after that. I could rip this show to shreds for not living up to the HBO standard but if I treat it like one of the Power shows or P-Valley I can honestly say I was entertained

Watching
Now that I watched the entire show
I can say the people behind this show must really hate selena gomez
You can literally see the 1:1 comparisons to their entire careers and backstories
Oh and surprise jocelyn was evil and using tedros to get some fire music

Seems like a vague way of the weeknd and levinson making a hamfisted commentary about women in the music industry fukking for tracks but they got a bit too lax on the writing and dropped so much plot the last episode barely makes sense

Weeknd and Selena dated.

would love to see the original 6 episode cut of this. fingers crossed HBO actually gives them a second season but i doubt it.

at least we got some banger tracks and wild scenes out of this. most shows do nothing memorable at all.

you mentioning Xander made me realize that's one of the most ridiculous characters ever. dude's story was ALL OVER the fukkin place, and after all that flip flopping he ended up being the opening act for Joss's world tour. Imagine Lady Gaga going on tour next week and they announce, "and opening for Gaga is... some gay dude she knows that no one has ever heard of!"

Finally saw the first ep and...it was kind of good? There are issues but that was a nice first episode. You can really tell why certain people are mad about the first twenty minutes or so. To me that only "works" as a parody. The writing is so on the nose there's no other way to react. The nudity rider, Jos giving approval, the intimacy coach getting locked in a bathroom, the nonstop "Finklestein" utterances. It felt like the scenes in True Romance with the (presumably Jewish) producer.

Like this real "wink wink nod nod" vibe that clearly angered Twitter's pop culture folks.

My only issue with the episode was Tedros' intro. That felt like this sleazy club DJ thing that didn't really fit his next couple scenes. This is supposed to be this imposing guy, seemingly setting the stage to manipulate a rich popstar. Especially in the way he shows up at the house's security gate looking like fukking Batman lol. Prob would have needed a much better actor to pull it off but IMO he should have been a force of nature in the club, compelling Jos to come to him, not the other way around.

it only works as parody/satire, and it is a mess of a show, just due to the behind the scenes issues, so there is some tonal contrasts that feel off, no amount of satirical aspirations change the flat writing in some spots, or Weeknd's acting. He just doesn't have it. And the worst ideas feel like his worst music video epics.

it's bret easton ellis lite, who is way heavier on the vioence/sex/drugs, this is pretty easy watch

and it is a lot of fun on that level. People expecting prestige drama/or worse people apart of the showing selling it as such, have misjudged it.

The closest thing to it, that isn't Ellis, is The Neon Demon. It should have probably been a lot better, like a bloodier psych thriller, with real stakes, and some satire, but it was a fun watch, if I wasn't a fan of the music, it would drop a whole grade.

This show is probably the most honest depiction of the music industry that I've ever seen.

I got a lot of Jayz Beyonce, vs Brittney Spears vs Kevin vs Ike and Tina Turner vibes from this show

@MasterThought you seen this show? what's your opinion?

I think Atlanta was far more realistic, for starters. Even a failed show like Vinyl was better than this.

I don't really care about the quality, I don't watch shows for that anymore. I watch film for what they reveal, what they are trying to say and this show says a lot. It's very honest and that's why people don't like it. It did not pander.
