:heh: GOP is a joke, unless your a millionaire being a republican is against your interest. many people are still ignorant to it, but they won't be forever.

i think an "independent" party is gonna start eventurally

-marijuana legalization
-pro choice
-massively smaller defense budget
-probably will say they'll create a large public works department for employment purposes and the large need of infrastructure repair
-pro regulation

basically what liberals have wanted for like 10 years

the democratic party isn't as liberal as democrats want it to be and the republican party.... is just fukkin crazy and getting crazier. they won't last for much longer at their rate.

i give it 10 years till theres a new mainstream political party

Can someone explain to me the reasons for there being only 2 mainstream parties in the US? I never really understood that, does it have something to do with the size of the country (making it harder to get a new party going), finances (do, well, the Republicans and Democrats receive money from the Federal State, like Political parties are subsidized in Europe?)...or is just that the political culture in the US is based on dichotomy, meaning you're either this or that, no in-betweens? There are a whole lot of mainstream parties in various European countries (except the UK, even tho the LibDem have gained some weight), and some new ones appear quite regularly. (This might be a matter for a thread actually, don't know).

It's real. And like TUH said, that's why they're trying to disenfranchise voters. The GOP needs to stop embracing sexism, racism, and homophobia and appealing to the "angry white male" ethos and then we can have more an open and pluralistic debate. There are lot of people who may hold some right-leaning views, but would never considering voting for a Republican because of their pandering to xenophobia and "taking America back." They need to start saying fukk those cacs and hopefully they'll just vote for us instead of the other guys sort of like Democrats do with black people.

The only Repub that seemed like he could possibly appeal to non angry old white man voters was Charlie Crist and they ran him out out of the party for holding a joint appearance with Obama and hugging him. Maybe Cristie could be that guy for them. We'll see what happens if he makes on the national stage in 2016.
This man always speaks the truth. :whoo:

I genuinely hope for a left of center party to come to fruition. I think it will take longer than 10 years though. The Republicans will have to completely capitulate themselves for the political discourse of this country to shift in that direction.

Republicans may be fukked at the national level but they still own state to state politics in a fairly large section of America. Hence the disruptive voting laws actually being passed.
It's coming. Like I said in a post a few days ago, the GOP has no identity which is a shame because it really does leave many with the Democratic Party as the only logical option.

The right wing of this country has gone bat shyt crazy and it very well might need to be destroyed in order to salvage some sense of order.

This a legit problem with for the GOP and will only continue to get worse for them as time goes on. The problem with the GOP is they went way to far to the right to appeal to the fringe (mostly hardcore Christians, racist, those stuck in the past). Now that fringe has basically taken over the party that even conservatives closer to the middle or at least willing to reach across the isle to work out problems are forced to fall in line or else they will feel the wrath of the fringe. The GOP thought the fringe of the party was the largest voting block but they weren't, they were just the loudest most outspoken part of the party.

You guys do realize that we are just two years removed from a wave election where the Republicans took back the House of Representatives and won the most House seats in like 65 years, right? And that Republicans set the all time record for most seats gained in state legislatures all across the country?

Americans are not stupid. They see liberal states like California, New York, Illinois, etc mired in massive debt and unemployment and formerly great cities like Detroit and Cleveland that are pretty much wastelands. Why would any sane person for a Democrat?

mostly because most countries have parliamentary systems where getting a percentage of the vote means something, in the us its winner take all for the most part, so there is no incentive for third parties and also the us is a very old democracy relative to most countries so things are pretty much settled and people like to follow tradition

Yeah I guess this makes sense...unfortunately this obviously also leads to extra polarization of politics, precisely because there is no "in-between", and also it seems hard to have real change...But then again having too many parties (such as in some EU countries) can also be a problem, no system is perfect anyway.

i think its wishful thinking, the basic facts are correct but the projections are BS, in the end the republicans will survive

i think after obama leaves a lot of black people will turn away from democrats just because democrats are corny, corporatist and too liberal, the latino vote is BS over the long run because they arent a real race or even a real ethnic group, over the long run they are the most likely to disappear with integration and miscegenation
Blacks are with Dems for life bruh thats pretty much a given. Dems are the party of affirmative action, unions, entitlements.... all very relevant to the black vote. Plus Obama is still black bruh. I could see a shift coming if the Repubs change their tune, but they are doubling down on exactly why everyone who isnt a white male hates them

You do recognize that the electorate in off year elections is considerably older and whiter. There is also plenty of debt and wasteland town and cities in the south and midwest. They may not make it on to the national radar but if things are bad in California they are probably worse in Alabama. I say this as a southerner who has lived in a state under conservative rule for the last 40 years.

What does this have to do with the long term implications of the GOP's shrinking base

Americans are not stupid. They see liberal states like California, New York, Illinois, etc mired in massive debt and unemployment and formerly great cities like Detroit and Cleveland that are pretty much wastelands. Why would any sane person for a Democrat?
They also see the bridling racism of the anti-immigration wave in AZ and the voter ID, the hypocrisy of the party of "small govt" creating shyt like the Patriot Act and Medicare Pt. D, the party of "liberty" fighting tooth and nail against abortion & gay marriage, or the party of fiscal responsibility bringing up tax cuts and wars they made no kinds of plans to pay for

I would argue that Americans ARE stupid, being that we have whittled our govt to these two completely useless excuses for parties. Yes, that includes you :youngsabo:

i dont think thats a given at all the democratic party is also the party of atheists and gay marriage and they stand against charter schools and vouchers

after obama leaves i think people will start asking questions about things like affirmative action, unions and entitlements, i think a lot of black people will slowly turn like me where i dont really give a fuk about any of these things

I will say one thing, social relations are going to take a turn for the worse if/when Obama gets re-elected. We're going to become even more polarized, tense, and hostile.

All this rage you hear from the right about the communist dictator Obama will be channeled from him to everyone who voted for him after his re-election. The first term they spent demonizing him and trying to convince people he is horrible president and they made a mistake for voting for him. After he gets re-elected they're going to be full of even more rage and they can't use the excuse that people were tricked into hope and change anymore. They're just going to start demonizing everyone who voted for him worse than they already are and basically calling them enemies of America and supporters of tyranny.

You can call it whatever you want but even now you can here a lot of grumbling in the black community about the democratic party and liberal ideas, I'm predicting that when Obama is gone from the scene those grumblings will get louder

bit anyways I disagree that there is demographic time bomb, I think the electorate and the parties will change to keep the 2 parties even
