how do yall feel about Mario Wonder? I know it reviewed great, but personally I don't feel like it did enough new to be considered GOTY. admittedly I haven't played much of it

I am going to be shouting out right robbery if BG3 doesn’t win. There was no better game this year and I will forever stand by that.

Do we get enough each year? At least to RE4R remaster levels?

I kinda agree about it maybe not being nominated but I feel like my other choice, PL, would get talk about it being worthy for GOTY with it being an expansion.

Imo, Cyberpunk should definitely be nominated for best ongoing game and win. Unlike NMS which while ambitious launched waaaay too early in comparison to what they were marketing, CP launched way too early on consoles and 2.0 + PL is basically a new game on console

PC fukks it up though I guess. Interesting/great year nonetheless. Honestly think we're not gonna get a consistent clean sweep like a lot of other years. Expecting to see a lot of variety this year
Sports and racing games almost never get GOTY nominations. Remakes should be the same. Resident Evil 4 is a remake of a GOTY level game. An original new game is getting passed over for it to be nominated.

Makes sense to feel this way but it's best in class this year for it's genre (same reason SF6 should have been nominated).

The difference in the quality of it and it's cousin Sonic Superstars says a lot about it.

I’m not finished yet but I’m loving the story and atmosphere, but the actual combat I’m finding to be pretty janky

For me it felt kind of janky when facing a mob of taken. It took some time and some flares/rockets but I got accustomed to it. Curious with what they do with the Max Payne remake.

fukk metacritic people were purposely spamming Starfield with bad reviews because it was an Xbox game.

Like I said before they should only do nominations by category like best rpg or open world game and then do like best score or storyline and then tally up the games with the most points or wins at the end of the night and crown that game of the year.

Chances are if I’m playing Mario wonder I’m not playing bg3. They are two completely different games. They shouldn’t be compared

Nah, I'd say people hit it with bad reviews because it's a Bethesda game. If you want an overly reductive summary, Bethesda games are, at this point, essentially in the same bucket as Arkane games (setting aside RedFall), but with exponentially larger buckets. They're very well made games, but they're so tied into being a uniquely "them" game, that we've gotten to a place where the audience for that style of game isn't the same as it used to be even eight years ago, let alone 17 years ago, when Bethesda started this current run of games with Oblivion.

Also, I'd say the very idea of even wanting to name a Game of the Year will inevitably pit games in competition against each other, regardless of how you approach it. I don't think the idea of deciding a winner via subcategories makes for an uneven playing field, since there's no guarantee that the best games even make use of all the subcategories in their design.
