Didn’t know where to place this, because there’s no official Europe thread.

I figure people who follow / care about French politics care about this:

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Loses Confidence Vote, Prompting Snap Election

@Liu Kang @mbewane

he's been on the ropes for awhile and been getting hit from all sides

I'll have to read up on what finally triggered the collapse

idk what will happen but I'm hoping Trump being a re-elected doesn't start a cascade across the world again

There probably is some more nuance over here for the way the countries and the political systems are set up but the extreme-right has often had a handful of guys who would qualify as "diverse" in their ranks. The one thing about a lot of their leaders is that they are clever and tactical, so in those cases they understand that the person is still more of an advantage than a liability, so they let the other stuff slide. They still oppose it on the societal level, but can be (not always obviously) more lax in regards to individuals. When you think about it, there's no real reason that gays couldn't be conservative on a variety of issues. It's a cliché to think that all gay people are "naturally" on the left. They can be on LGBQT issues and not on others. Extreme-right has understood that which is why they instrumentalize those issues against foreigners.

One of the most powerful conservatives in the USA right now, billionaire Peter Thiel is gay, so we seem to be moving somewhat in that direction though he is a donor not a politician. I am less sanguine that he could be directly elected.

Last time Trump was in office his ambassador to Germany was openly sniping at Merkel from the Right so I wouldn't hold my breath.

The US system makes it more complicated because in the US it's much more of a popularity contest, that's why candidates' partners, family, etc are important. Like someone's marital status could legit be an issue it seems, let alone his/her sexual preferences. That's a little less the case over here, also because the political system is mostly parlementarian and not presidential (France being a notable exception). With that being said, going full extreme-right/white supremacist would go a long way to "compensate" him being gay, white racists always rally under that banner. The guy who created the whole "Great Replacement" bullshyt theory was openly gay.

I've always found is lack of people skills kind of baffling but I think its also just being French and brash

:lolbron:

I do know it was a 100 year storm and I'm guessing there wasn't a lot of media/services on the ground because even F24 hadn't been able to give much insight after it hit a couple days ago

How's Bertrand coping with his buddy fleeing to Moscow btw?

Breh, every time you post this Bertrand dude, his analysis is biased as fukk.

The whole convo has a different tone when you quote it whole :

Lemme translate :
- Lady : houses crumbled, floods, so we wanna know which means you gonna give us. So far my family doesnt know if I'm dead or if I'm alive. I'm here today. There is no telephone, network doesn't work and you come here today to say everything is fine.
- Macron : Nooo
- Lady : But everything is bad, life is not good, it's not true. White people have light, AC, they have it all. Me I have my daughter... We're gonna count the dead in the slums there, that's the truth, Mr president. So everybody need to film to show what's happening in Mayotte to the world. It's not true. Life is not good, were gonna tell the truth. Mister president is here, so we gonna tell the truth. The mamas are all not here, there are old people in their homes, some young at the beach. No no no I don't agree everything is fine in the island. Either the military enter homes to clean up... But now things are not fine, this is not true. I am a (can't hear the rest with crowd cheering)
- Macron : So, I spent the day with you and have been trying to discuss and now I have to shout to talk, if anybody heard me say "everything is fine" once, raise your hand.
- Lady : Everything is bad !
- Macron : Ok so why are you making me say that ?! I'm telling you, everybody is fighting, you've lived trough something terrible. Everybody is fighting, no matter the color but don't oppose people, because if you do, we are fukked. Because you're happy to be in France. If France wasn't here to come you would be 10000 times more in the shytter (there he fukked up)
- Crowd : Now, we disagree.
- Macron : There is no other place in the Indian ocean that help like that. That's reality. Why want to be a French department and say it doesnt work when France show solidarity ? Which other territory in the Indian ocean is sending water, aid, doctors like we're doing ? We all need to be respectful. We're gonna fight til the end if we're a team. You are a team, you're dividing yourself.
- Crowd : Mr president, don't get angry like that
- Macron : Of course I'm angry because what she said was irresponsible and now the mic is down, I'm gonna shout louder. Listen to me.

I'm not saying he did well but his reply was mostly a response to that white people line and her saying he said things were fine.

The destruction in Mayotte is total. 70% of houses were impacted and the dead will likely number in the thousands potentially 5 figures. They say the storm was one in a century event.

The infrastructure is badly impacted, the airport is only usable at day, the hospital, the roads, the drinking wayer, telephone and energy networks are severely destroyed.

Aid is coming from mainland France but first has go to La Reunion island and then go to Mayotte. It's understandable that people there are angry but it makes sense that it takes time for aid to come if the infrastructre has collapsed.

Bertrand is definitely a whore for the Chinese government but the majority of his critiques of the French government are legitimate.

They may be legitimate but they are not always correct. Here, he willingly cut the first part to make it look like Macron was scolding Mahorais while it was clear it was a direct reply to what the lady said.

Macron deserves plenty of shyt but apart from the way he made his point, you can't blame him much here.
