So if we're making a list of the greatest movies of all time, realizing that spans a long ass time, this movie belongs on the list?

I say yes. I'm now voting on a movie based on it answering the question "is this movie a must watch?" recommendation. I think this movie shows how to take a "childhood" property and adapt it to all ages. The theme of family will forever resonate with audiences, and everyone has their own identity and it doesn't feel disjointed. Plus, what's the closest movie to this type by up to '90 - Toxie? everything else was either animated and aimed at children, puppetry aimed at family (children), or completely cheesy (Flash Gordon, Krull)

Honestly this movie has a lot of things I love about movies.

Classic characters.
Classic quotables.
A well told Story that's elevated even more by the characters.
Adapted the source material beautifully.
Excellent narratives on family, revenge.
And it's just fukkin fun, cool, funny, dark, etc.

Can you really complain about this movie without sounding like a bytch?

It's not as technically sound as Watchmen, but it's a better film because of the experience. Nostalgia be damned because it can span generations.

okay question for everyone so this doesn't just turn into a thread where we quote the movie:

Why? Why does this go in? And I'm asking for reasons other than "my childhood..."

Quite a few reasons for me. Will try to be short as possible. For one the impact of this movie was huge. Fred Wolf had already brought the turtles to damn near every child, the movie brought their parents along for the ride. As a child i was aware of the FW turtles but completely in the dark of the Mirage ones. This movie balanced the campiness of the cartoon with the grit of the original comics. Something imo no turtles movie has successfully done since. (For Kids TMNT show doesnt count)

As others have pointed out the movie took the took itself serious enough and truly respected the source mayerial while taking liberties as any movie does. Hell it was a much easier transition into the comics after watching the movie. Going from cartoon to seeing black and white turtles cut Shredder’s head off could traumatize an 8 yo.

The action scenes were top notch and balanced with good humor (at the time at least) driven by a character centered story that did a great job given some depth to every main character. Plus the movie had loads of heart. Despite the wise cracking the four turtles in the beginning are not the ones we see at the last cowabunga. They’ve grown and their evidence throught the movie.

For it’s impact cultural and cinematically, respect to the source material, execution of storytelling and top notch visuals I call it the GOAT (TMNT movie if nothing else).

Cant believe this scene wasn’t dropped already. Gets ya right in the heart, just long enough.

Movie still holds up. I watch it every couple of years (watched it on Blu-ray for the first time last year). And fukk CGI. These Jim Henson costumes are :ohlawd:

The blu ray works for it too because you don’t see the seams. The work they did on the costumes is incredible. Turtles 2 on the other hand?

TMNT 2 must have cut you deep breh. Guess you made the mistake i did and watched as an adult. I just chopped it up as being a live version of the the Fred Wolf turtles, for better or worse (most episodes are unwatchable). The movie is so silly out the gate and never lets up on the camp. I watched it once as an adult. Never again.

The fact the turtles weren't allowed to use their weapons because of parents complaining is :hhh:

I know what it is. It’s just such a step down in every way from the first. That’s my issue. Like a huge step down. The script, the stunts, the costumes, everything. As a kid I loved it but I watched it in high school and the shine wore off lol
