Yes but you can do both, if we agree that very large majority of poor black people are not committing crimes then we can agree to punish the small percentage that commit “violent” crimes. At the same time working to eliminate the economic reasons for poverty.
I don't believe we should be sentencing anyone to life in prison no matter their color, but that's just my person feelings. There are much better ways to handle that shyt, and if it's people who just truly can't be part of society I don't think treating them like animals is the answer either but we should keep them away from the public. At the same time I also don't believe we should encourage sending more black people into a prison system that has been weaponized against us for almost half a century now.
So I'd much rather focus on structural change than hitting more black people especially young black people with life sentences.

You have black people zealously supporting death penalty statutes that will almost certainly be applied only to cases in which the defendant is black.
