Take a injured star player with a huge contract( money and term), place him on LTIR (long term injured reserve)and take advantage of the new freed cap space to make trades and add new players or to stay under the limit of the salary cap. Remember Nikita Kucherov? He couldn’t play hockey for the entire 2021 regular season because of recovery from a hip surgery so Tampa put him in LTIR, but he was ready and healthy for game 1 of the playoffs. The timing was perfect and suspicious. It was too good to be true.

Make it like the NBA now has with the 2nd apron, you can’t spend over 20 million over the cap. It’s clear the hard cap has outlived his usefulness with how many teams struggle to stay at the limit. But Bettman’s stubborn and incompetent ego won’t allow his lifelong mission as a commissioner look like a failure
