Nothing wrong with his advice at all—its good advice especially to be preached to high schoolers, preventing them from making life altering mistakes and furthering their education, or getting a trade.
only tidbit that I would say to counter his advice is that we’re in times where it may be difficult for black folks mostly in the working class to live under their means. The COL has gotten pretty outrageous—everything from groceries, housing, cars, utilities, etc. even white Americans married or single are struggling. Food pantries are struggling to keep up with the demand (I only know because of my job and a program my company supports).
When people arent getting wages that have been adjusted to match up to a higher COL, yet they still need to take care of the bare necessities to survive and live that’s often when they’re living paycheck to paycheck. All it takes is an emergency and they’re fukked. Yet that’s the reality for a lot of people these days. Living under your means isn’t as practical for those people.
Sadly, even down here in the south, housing is expensive. I was getting my locs retwisted this morning and the woman was telling me that she is now separated from her cheating husband, and instead of keeping the house and kicking him out, she moved out into a small apartment. It was intentional.
She didn’t want to have a space big enough for any of her adult kids to be able to come live with her. She mentioned that her 30 year old, 28 year old and 24 year old sons had all moved back into the house with her ex husband. They had nowhere else to go and can’t afford their own spots.
Things are only going to continue getting more expensive.
