So what are you saying then, because Europeans basically colonized every part of the globe these last 200 years. Baseball is popular in much of Latin America and the latin Caribbean Japan because of American imperialism. But even many Arabic states play soccer mainly and were never colonized. Soccer's appeal in much of the world, much like basketball...has to do with its easy availability without expensive equipment and because its fun. Not because some cacs beat it into them

But that addresses the developing nations argument- Which I agree with you, the cost is a large reason for its popularity; But far from the only reason. I mean, basketball is probably just as cheap and close to as old as soccer, but why have certain nations adopted soccer instead?

My point was geared towards bigger developed nations (non-europeans of course). The South Korea's, Japans, Canada, Australia's, countries with $$ and adequate infrastructure... Soccer is far from exclusive and sometimes not even #1

I've met and know far more South Korean soccer players, than baseball players. I really don't know if the popularity of it compared to baseball can be downplayed in that country unless i see some data. Japan has just been playing baseball longer, but the explosive growth of it in Japan cannot be ignored. Soccer is very big in Canada...but hockey IS more publicized due to their success in international and NHL play. Canadians definitely respect and play the sport way more than Americans on the whole do...same with Australia and rugby when compared to soccer. At the end of the day, my point is a very small minority of the world doesn't have soccer as head and shoulder above another sport...but almost everywhere it is still played HEAVILY.

If your a coach at a school, you're not going to approach a black kid to play soccer, because you need his athletic abilities for the other sports

soccer was always the sport for kids who couldn't compete in the other sports, that's how it is growing up in America

It's also interesting how Soccer in America has become an upper middle class sport. In countries like Brazil u can see them poor kids in those favelas playing and everything

Im sure u have people who did YMCA and played soccer as kids buts once u hit Middle School it becomes BBall and Football and Track by default soccer gets pushed to the back.

Then once u hit highschool u wont get many white or black kids cause soccer season starts towards the end of BBall and Beginning of track and throw in Spring Football training and Baseball season starting, Only the ones dedicated to soccer are gonna play it

Soccer ain't expensive to play. Not anymore expensive than basketball. You don't even need a court or gym. All you need is grass. You don't really need a ball. Poor people in Latin America and Africa made soccer balls out of anything and can practice/play. That's why they're good.

The real middle class sport is tennis
