This is the first show I've watched in years... not a TV head at all, watched the Wire/Sopranos extensively and couple other shows ... but peeped this when I saw Simon & Pelecanos behind it. Pardon my excitement but I've got so many things to say. And nobody I know is watching this SMH.
Knowing of the period, content, setting of the show beforehand, one thing that really intrigued me as the season progressed was how violence would be incorporated, in a "traditional" sense. But there is almost a perfect harmony in this world between everyone. I was so invested in each character & story, scene setting and dialogue I slowly began to realise this show was challenging my expectations. Its particularly emphasised because there is a constant dark, dark energy surrounding every scene it seems at any point something had to give. That scene with CC and Ashley in the pilot was shot so quietly but intense even I overlooked the normality of a pimp physically abusing his ladies.
That scene between Meth and Candy was so significant because it was the first cold, stinging, penetrating moment that presented me with conflict that I was initially expecting. But even the way it was shot and the dialogue used was very atypical. Great, great scene.
As the show grew, I bought into this being a story and thus the stories being central. For example, I slyly expected CC to find Ashley and torture her for going AWOL but it never happened, she just left happily and that's that. Or even for Lori to say fukk CC and go see the movie, then CC drags her along the Deuce or something. But she just listened and went off. I was so shocked of Leon vs Black Thought - I was like "somebody actually buss their gun in this show???" lmao. At some point Vincent and the pimps had to have a squabble right? For making them extraneous? Nope. But that dark energy was present in almost every scene for me.
