I didn't really like 'American Gangster', from first viewing, at a sneak preview in early November 2007, I didn't think Denzel did a great job, neither did T.I, too much Russel Crowe, cliched, and I hated the ending. Well made, competent film, but very Ridley Scott, needed a more innovative director, it was just typical big budget Hollywood drug movie.

Nicholson gave nothing to the film beyond his name, imo. He was chewing up scenery doing "Jack" the whole time. Everyone else in the film was pretty great though :obama:

I only call it overrated because of threads like this with the "definitely a classic" shyt thrown around. It got a lot of love and earned Scorsese his first directing Oscar, but I think he has several films better. Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Mean Streets are all definitely better imo. The Departed is more inline with Gangs Of New York, Cape Fear & The King of Comedy....his "second tier" movies....obviously this is all subjective.

Basterds >>>>>>>>>>

It's every bit as great as Pulp Fiction imo.

Movies better than The Departed since 06.

Dark Knight Rises, The Dark Knight, The Bourne Ultimatum, Slumdog Millionaire, Inception.

I'm sure I'm forgetting several others.

Drive is easily better than The Departed

Both The Departed and American Gangster were average

Internal affairs is 10 times the movie departed tried to be! Scust at lames saying the departed was a better movie :childplease:

I disagree.

And I saw Internal Affairs both before The Departed and since.

I don't think either is a great film, but I think The Departed handled the other aspects of the story outside the main arc better. Although the end is still fukking crazy unnecessary
