Good read..brings up a lot of good points about narrative in the oscars..there's always the movie that wins over the movie that should've won so of course they bring up Pulp Fiction and Forest Gump but also Kings Speech and Social Network.

X movie and Y movies: X movies are the harder edge choices, like pulp fiction, and Y movies are safer, like forest gump

My question is why anyone alive in 2014 would even give a shyt about the Academy Awards. It's not just this whole X Vs. Y argument the guy talks about, it's about the Academy itself basically being a self-congratulatory Hollywood back-patting club favoring conservatism over innovation and pretending world cinema is a side act to their industry.

fukk award shows and fukk the people that give power to them by acknowledging their existence.

Film geeks breh, regardless of how much we may dump on the academy awards or any awards show, and even though a lot of us understand all the machinations behind them and the politicking that goes into who wins what, I think we all love film so much that there's still something magical about it that lives outside the realm of cynicism

Bah! We live in the age of the internet, where one can bask online in his loves and passions twenty-four-seven if one would desire so. In such a time, the usefulness of a broken system like awards shows is non-existent, as we can freely debate at any given time the greatest (and worst) our beloved art has to offer.

Award shows.... nothing but another overblown marketing scheme for Hollywood movies through celebrations paid for and bought by that same Hollywood. The only magic they have is what they leech of romanticizing film geeks.

That's your opinion breh, I disagree. We debate all the time but part of the fun of awards season is debating the awards and also being put on to films we may not have in another way because they get shine. Not everyone on this board has the same level of experience when it comes to movies and which movies to watch or even exposed to those movies. So let's say someone watched 12 years a slave because it won an oscar, that's a good look. Or someone decides to watch There Will Be Blood because DDL got so much love for it. Yeah we have access to stuff but not everyone is exposed to stuff the same way and to be real, some people don't care. Not everyone comes online to look up movies, or torrents, or check out the latest movie news. If the awards system means nothing to you that's cool man, no beef at all, but obviously not everyone feels that way:whoknows:

For me it's mostly about listing good movies, no matter who wins it in the end. I've never read or heard anyone talk about Twelve O'Clock High but because it got a nom I saw it and it's a fantastic movie. That has happened to me dozens of times and for that... I'd like to thank the academy

Good for you, too bad for all the great movies that never got nominated because of the intrinsic bullshyt politics of awards shows.
