Yeah that's why I tapped out because I thought the movie was overkill boring:scust:

On top of that, the kid characters are all insufferable. The father is far from the sympathetic character he’s made out to be. The wife is a comically underwritten piece of narrative convenience. And the video game bit at the end is lazy, undercooked trash that would be rightly ridiculed if Yang wasn’t so highly regarded.

With all that said, A Brighter Summer Day is a truly great (albeit flawed) film that deserves way more attention than it gets.

Agreed, any Lino Brocka film is great. Highly recommend Manila in the Claws of Light.

On that note, my favorite working filmmaker is another Pilipino, Lav Diaz. His films are amazing but fair warning, long (4 hours is a relatively short film for Diaz). Criterion hasn’t released anything of his yet but I figure it’s inevitable. Norte: The End of History is a great start point.
