Is the hbcu experience worth more debt? The only reason I'm in school now is just to say I'm getting a degree because I don't really need one for my career. I'm in community college now, but I'm getting ready to transfer to an Hbcu. I'm confused and don't know what to do anymore.

nope

How much more debt are we talking?
With the money Im going to save by going to school in state (UCLA :win:) vs an HBCU I can go to Africa for a summer.
That would be a better and more unique experience IMO. Plus I can join the BSU to be around more black folk and activities. :yeshrug:

I say go to Georgia Tech. Case and western is a great university, but for engineering it has to be G- Tech.
My girlfriend has me applying there, so I'll definitely put the app in.
I'll also go for CIT and RIT too, just for the slight chance.

I graduated from an HBCU (Grambling State) and the experience was good. The reason why I said it was a good experience, is due to the fact that I majored in biology and was able to meet a professor who looked like me and was able to share experiences of racism while working in the science field. I went the same route as you did, with going to juco's (I went to 3, I was kicked out of one JUCO) before transferring to GSU (I was 20 when I transferred).

I worked and meet brothers and sisters that went to PWI's, but when you sit down and get to know them, the majority wish they went to a HBCU. The reason why they said it was because of the passive aggressive racism they recieved while attending those institutions. The only ones who did not recieve the passive aggressive racism was my homies that played ball and the reason was due to the fact that they make the school millions of dollars in ticket sales and etc. The other brother and sisters, who did not play ball said they liked the PWI's was because they save more money. They also said networking and the school's name, but the majority of them do not network with any of their white friends and the majority of them are unemployed or not working in their field.

But you have to understand why HBCU's cost more than PWI's. HBCU's were first desgined because PWI's did not want you black ass until they found a way to make money off of you. Simple as that. It's basically, getting rid of the competition. It's just like when you support black businesses, the black business will cost more than the white business, because the black business get charged more when they order good from a white suppliers. The white supplier will charge the black business 1.00 for 500 rolls, but will charge the asian business 0.30 for 500 rolls.

The decision is up to you, but this is really the only time where you will be around 1000's of other black folks that are like minded and want to be successful. You do not have to join a black student union at a white school to fell like your apart of something. I had up's and down at my alma mater, but it was a good experience.

I would have to say it can be worth the debt if you choose the right major. If it's not engineering, IT, or nursing then don't bother in my opinion but I would say that for any college...I had a helluva of time at a hbcu, I transferred from a juco so the debt wasn't too bad for 2 years, but overall it's was a great experience considering my high school was <10% African American...I needed that experience....

I got my undergrad in business. I'd say it depends on if you really know what you wanna do with it and if you can get an internship before school is done. Otherwise it's not specific like an accounting, marketing or HR major so you could lose out to those majors in job contention. Not always, but sometimes and definitely on the accounting side.

According to a few articles out there everyone getting business degrees and there is an unemployment rate associated with it.
