How good at maths do you need to be at maths to work in Econ/Finance or in a Bank?
My Major next year is in International Relations but would like to get work in a more financial job or study at a masters level.
I have an interest in personal finance etc but my maths is slightly below avg. Always been a D student but I’m willing to work on it.
Short Answer: It depends.
Longer Answer: It depends on which field within Econ/Finance or a bank. You don’t have to be a guru in math, but you do have to be relatively comfortable with numbers. Essentially, you have to be able to spot when the numbers just don’t make sense. Statistics/Econometrics would probably be a better math courses to take. Those are probably the most useful.
For some professions e.g. Quantitative trading, HF Trading, you would definitely need to be airtight with might. That and you’d want some coding/computer science knowledge as well.
But for most Analyst type roles, you just have to be at good spotting trends and answering what could be driving the numbers.
I work as a business analyst now and did Econ in college. Was never the best at math but tbf, I didn’t try as hard as I could sometimes. Feel free to ask me any questions you have.
EDIT: If it you're up to it, it may make sense to try to get a CFA. It'll expose you to a lot of the knowledge that would be required to function as say an equity analyst etc.
