I've seen both sides of the spectrum. Grew up in a working class black neighborhood with a lot of single parent families and kids on free lunch. Then moved to a more suburban type environment with whites and latinos. Became friends with a few brothers that were totally whitewashed and I just wasn't on that steez. I wanted to go to the parties with the black chicks, and they always wanted to kick it with the snow bunnies. At the time, I thought it was because white chicks were "easy". But looking back, that is what they actually preferred.
If I have kids, there a couple things I will try to do to prevent my children from becoming this way. Ideally, I'd like my children to grow up in a mixed area, but I'd take a majority black suburb over a predominatly white suburb. I definitely will try to foster a sense of pride in their blackness as well. But I think the biggest thing is having strong social skills. To be real, most black kids that gravitate towards having white friends are unable to socialize with other black kids in a positive way. At my school it was the socially inept black kids that were befriended by white kids, which were probably motivated to have a black friend for cool points. You could be goofy as hell, dress terribly, and have zero swag, and white boys will still want to hang with you. Not saying it's right or wrong, but that's what I saw. I hope to raise children that have strong social skills and won't be relegated to that role.
