The discourse around A24 is striking and banal in it's binary nature. They have made maybe 100 movies. Or 250. I don't know. Maybe more. There's some really dope stuff in there. There's some weaker shyt. There's some mixed thing. Like ANY studio. It's a testament to their marketing and branding that people even know their name. No one knows Neon.

When did people start fighting over fukking movie studios? Let alone knowing their names.

Two things pointed me to that in the last 2 years:

A girl at a coffee shop I go too, somehow we started talking movies, and she was like maybe 25. Very very liberal. Passionate on LGBTQ/gay rights. All that shyt. And she talked about A24 movies, this was the first time outside of an industry convo, or here that I heard people drop a studio name. And she was passionate about them. I've seen a lot of A24 movies, but it's movie studio.

Another girl, 30, said A24 was 'basic,' overrated. But this was someone who maybe sees 0 movies in theaters a year, so she hadn't seen nearly any of A24's movies. And I was laughing, and was just like confused how she even knew the studio, without seeing the movies.

but what I don't have is any social media, and this is where movies are marketed. That is 100% where both those girls picked up A24. So that's why I am so out of it.

Questionable decisions in the second half but overall it was good. The movie length was jarring but the story kept me engaged. Not sure if I'd even call it slow, it's just long.

For it's ambition, Brody's acting and cinematography, I gave it a 3 ½ on Letterboxd.
it was completely unnecessary and tanked the movie IMO

Not on the level of Godfather or TWBB because it couldn't stick the landing. It's good up until the rape part, that ruined the movie for me. Just a really trite on the nose metaphor for the American dream and turned the Pearce character who is really interesting up to that point into a cartoon character. Also Brody's performance is pretty overrated

The further I get away from the movie the more clearly unnecessary it was.

Finally got around to watching this. Just got to the intermission

1. I can definitely see people thinking bro is gay. The film gives you enough material to interpret him as a repressed homosexual.
2. Its great seeing Isaac de bankole acting again. He's at his best when he's speaking his original language though. His dialogue is too stiff in this.
3. The acting is on point. Felicity Jones has sex appeal even though she lacks body :whew:

Comments like this are why you should watch a movie from start to finish before coming here:lolbron:

Just finished it.

Harris :scust:

I didn't think about why he didn't remarry until that scene.

The ending felt rushed. This feels like something that they considered turning into a miniseries before deciding that it should be a movie. I think it would've worked better as a 5 part miniseries.

Still great cinematography and acting with bits of really good writing, but I think if there was more time and a bigger budget the movie would be an HBO classic

I think the backlash on A24 is partially due to some people who base their whole personality around being into A24 movies. It becomes less about appreciating good cinema, and is really just more pathetic brand worshipping. No different than Marvel stans and Disney adults.

Like you said, they make some good films, then some other shyt I ain't too crazy about. But generally i think they're valuable and putting out interesting shyt during a time where a lot of the other studios aren't backing enough original cinema. No reason to hate them, but no reason to stan a movie studio either
