Put me in the camp of finding this good but not great and that’s cool. I was walking out of the theater during the intermission on a cinema high, and then the second half makes some…choices. I’m still thinking about the film though and that says a lot. For only a ~10 million budget, this joint looked and sounded amazing. The lighting was phenomenal. For sure paying it another watch someday.
These comps are interesting, too. I hardly got PTA from this. It felt more like something from Malick and LvT, tbh. Guess I could see this sharing the ambitions of TWBB, but couldn’t quite piece those bright ideas all together in the end nearly as well.
The tone shift was fitting, and I liked it. Ripped that mask right off. Brady damn near hits the audience over the head for what was to come during the first half. Guy Pearce, who puts on a fine performance, plays a character who reeks of capitalism and opportunist from the very first moment he’s introduced.
I generally prefer seeing the fall more than the rise in these type of flicks, but this one had some unnecessary lulls in the back-half that I could see Corbet later in his career wishing he’d cut out.
I really liked it. Laszlo is a great character and Brody is excellent in the role.
I don't think its for everybody, but it kept me engaged for the full running time, and a lot of the shots and bits of philosophy have stayed in my head since watching it.
Wow. I don't know how to feel about this. Its still a great movie. Changing the actors accents is an interesting choice, I wonder how the actors felt about that.
With the visuals you can look at it like they had a few options - they could not show the buildings at all (a lot of older or low budget films take this approach), actually build those structures, which would be expensive, or use paintings, models or computer generated images. In each case there are pros and cons, and some require more people to complete than others.
But if you have access to this new technology thats cheap and actually looks better than all those options, I don't see why you wouldn't use it. You're going to see more and more of this regardless of whether the films are oscar contenders.
Theres a law of diminishing returns to that logic though. Eventually we will get to the point where people can make whole realistic hollywood movies from their home computers.
