That whole period from late 1996 until the Montreal Screwjob was one of my favorite periods in the WWE. The storylines didn't involve authority figures and the wrestling was on point. Look at the talent on the roster at the time. Bret, Owen, Bulldog, HBK, Mankind, Undertaker, Pillman, Goldust, Sid, Triple H, Faarooq, The Legion of Doom, Vader, etc.

Even though the NWO angle was hot in 1997 I'm really surprised that the WWE didn't get at least a couple of ratings wins that year.

This is when they knew how to do shyt. Go to commercial then come back with half of the cage taken down (workers still taking the rest down) and then Vince walks in. shyt seems so fukking real. Then you have the other wrestlers come down with NO MUSIC and it really seemed like they hated each other and wanted to fight. The exchange with Bret and Sid but then Bret notices Sid and jumps on him because he just fukked him out of the title...shyt was great. Damn I miss wrestling from back then.

That heat at WM 13 when he didn't stop attacking Austin after the bell and the pop for Shamrock stopping him:wow: Being in the crowd and a Hitman mark, I didn't get it back then but watching it now from his return to Mania shows how well done the angle was.

That Bret/Austin street fight on Raw around this time period was :wow:

they could've got 2 or 3 more one on one PPV matches between the two following Mania 13 and they would've been huge. Everybody back then was dying to see them tear each other apart that's why the Raw street fight was so ill.

Bret always calling Austin a "rotten stinking Hyena" used to have me :dead:

They did have another PPV match after WM 13 and no one remembered it at all. It main evented the show over the title match. It wasn't anything special.

What made this heel turn work was the fact that it was so simple. WWF simply listened to the audience and let them dictate their plans. When Bret came back after WM12 the audience was different, it was gearing toward the Attitude Era and he wasn't as over anymore as the white meat babyface. So they did the logical thing and turned him heel.

It's exactly the opposite of how WWE operates today.

As a kid I'll admit I was seeing what WWF wanted me to see and I was like "YOUSE A CRYBABY BRET :pacspit:"

But this past year listening to The New Generation Era Project Podcast and actually watching all the ppvs and important Raws from 1994 -1998 and actually watching everything unfold and hearing all of the backstories and important details that I didn't know back then I must say :whoo:Bret Hart was 100% in the right he was not wrong at all everyone in one way or another screwed him.

It is truly amazing to see how the fans in a short period of time went from being traditionalist to being only for blood, sex, tables and fukkery. Worst part was Bret saw all of this coming and was very vocal about it hoping that he could change it... in a weird way I think Bret saw the end of his career and tried to at least change his fate in Montreal only for all of it to come crashing down for him. :mjcry:Bret was the last pure babyface hero before the anti-hero wave became the thing to become.

Yeah Austin bret was the best double turn I can think of. It worked so well because Bret had scull motivation to turn heel, he was getting fukked over and made fun of constantly and it pushed him over the edge.

shyt showcased why bret is the undisputed GOAT. :wow:

Vince should turn Roman similarly like bret's angle.
