The "Black panther wasn't that good" take is the new movie hipster line that has to be discussed

Is this your King?? *Looks away in shame*

First, no diss to @Take It In Blood who made me think of this and a reply by someone else, since you were talking about action scenes, and it was clearly not a hot take, it was an opinion.

But I've heard this a lot in the last year, on the ringerverse podcast Van Lathan stands on this square and I just don't fukkin get it.

How is that movie overrated? It was entertaining, beginning to end...was iconic in both acting performances and what it represented. Had a GOAT villian with bulletproof motives, a legit hero and a heroes journey, 5 star cast, and a good ending. The only reasonable complaint is the sus CGI on the bridge. Other than that it's an absolute classic.

Help me understand how we're now putting Ironman or age of Ultron and shyt above black panther?? It's truly some contrarian shyt to me.
Its got the best story, the BEST Supporting cast, its themes are clear and powerful and I'd argue outside of a few action scenes its clearly the best directed MCU film. The flow, the score, etc just ties in beautifully.

The problem with Black Panther is that its in the MCU. Therefore it doesnt do the MCU things at the highest level (action/athough the tribal fights are among the best in the MCU imo and CGI). So when they see BP its not entertaining like other MCU movies.

If Black Panther was just something totally separate from the MCU it would be appreciated more. Its why the Academy was drawn to it cause its not doing the typical MCU things every 15 mins.

And to be fair that draws criticism as well. Its between two worlds trying to please MCU standards and also trying to be much deeper. And in some ways doing that can fail both sides for people.

The Eternals is the other end of the spectrum.

Great acting, top cinematography and scene composition (T'Challa emerging from the sand into the spiritual world or that shot of Killmonger walking to the throne with the camera upside down to symbolize the take over), amazing soundtrack and costumes, and an interesting scenario with a compelling villain...

It's undoubtedly a great movie :ehh:

What pushes it over most other Marvel movies in my opinion is that it's the only one who has several frames of reference when it comes to its characters and scenario. Killmonger coming back home and the parallels it has with the African diaspora and its relationship with the continent grounds the movie in real matters that are unheard of in cinema. That makes it more than a superhero movie.

Now does it have flaws? Yes. The final fighting scene is ass. They didn't have time to work on it and messed it up if I remember correctly.
Is that enough to make it a bad movie or overrated? I don't think so.

My opinion is that masses are really fickle, and when something is really loved, a countdown activates until those who didn't mess with it become the dominant voice. Like with Kendrick Lamar for example.

Yeah, the CGI was embarrassing at times.

And Disney owns ILM who were GOATS....have they fallen off or something?

Probably just everyone doing green screens and shyt. The green screen shyt has gotten outta hand and a lot of it looks bad when it should be improving.
Production issues led to the final fight scene being botchered.

I love corridor crew. Super nerds but they're film graphic artists and absolutely know their shyt, and the videos are always a laugh. They get a list guests lately, and their Bollywood reacts are comedy :mjlol:

Its still crazy how one fight just ruins the film for some people. And a few are probably legit cause a bad end can sour things completely for some people.

I really wish instead of reshooting the fight last minute they just decided to have the suit destroyed/torn near the mines (quick/easier CGI) and then have them fight on that mountain/where he saw the sunset. Making it like the tribal fight 2.0, but they are moving faster with partly protected suits. For what they were trying to accomplish they needed to push the release date back. Which I wonder if Feige regrets cause they may have won a few more awards if they did so. Also wouldnt give haters that one scene to latch on.

BP is dope, but yes the Russo's had a better take on T'challa.

It's not a perfect film, I don't even know if it's top 5 MCU for me, top 10 for sure. But flaws and all the hype it got was about more than the movie, it was black hollywood royalty on display and trying to be unique and still be in the MCU sandbox as it was constructed is a hell of a task, peace to Ryan Coogler on doing well on his first shot at it.

I don't think they would've gotten the feel of Wakanada and the royalty of it as well however. Nothing about Asgard feels magnetic and they're GODS.

Statements like this are specifically why nikkas started calling BP overrated

The hype train made the movie doper than it was

The same thing happened with Endgame and is happening right now with No Way Home

Not perfect but a really good film imo. Weird cgi and the final fight scene was underwhelming but I really liked its execution, the look and feel of Wakanda, and it's storyline. Wankandans helping out all is the African diaspora worldwide would've been easy and expected but they went with an the inclusive separate nation instead and it opened up dialog and had you guessing between Ta'challa and Killmonger as to who's right or wrong. That alone gives it a huge boost and respectability imo

I’m surprised people didn’t like MBJ’s performance. His dialogue felt a little forced at times but he was the highlight of the movie for me.
MBJ is one of those actors that's great at playing themselves and has a range he excels in

Villain is not in that range:russ: Killmonger had some moments but overall he was a Tyler Perry villain
