The controversy surrounding The Birth of a Nation director Nate Parker has not been enough to deter a strong showing in the nominations for the NAACP Image awards, which were announced on Tuesday.

Parker has been nominated for best film actor, writer and director, while Birth of a Nation, a drama about the brutally suppressed 1831 slave rebellion led by Nat Turner, received nominations for best film, and best independent film. Aja Naomi King received a best supporting actress nod as Turner’s wife, Cherry.

Nate Parker’s heartfelt account of Nat Turner, the slave who led a rebellion in 1830s Virginia, is conventionally paced but achieves a dark and sinuous poetry

After the film’s success at the Sundance film festival, where it won both the grand jury prize and audience awards for dramatic features, hopes were high for its commercial and awards success. However, after it emerged that Parker had been charged with, and acquitted of, rape while a student at Penn State university, its momentum stalled and box office returns were modest on its release in October.

Moonlight, the much-admired drama about a young black man’s struggle with his sexuality, also gained six nominations, including best director for Barry Jenkins and best supporting actor for Mahershala Ali and Trevante Rhodes.

The Image awards, presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for “excellence in film, television, music, and literature by outstanding people of color” covers a variety of art forms. Beyoncé leads the nominations list, with nine, including entertainer of the year and best female artist, while Atlanta creator Donald Glover has three in the TV list, for best director, actor and writer.

The NAACP Image awards will be announced on February 11. For a full list of nominees click here.

Just seen this hours ago, it was more engrossing than 12 years (you felt shyty for these slaves without the emotional blackmail tacked on like McQueen did). However it was tame as fukk, everything from the rape to the deaths of whitey was left to our imagination. That's only effective for 1 pivotal scene, if you do that every time it's like you are flinching, with a movie of this nature that's unforgivable.

Movie felt strangely paced, like it's called birth of a nation but most of the movie is just a formulaic slave drama with Nat never exhibiting any inner militant. When the rebellion happened it just seemed like a couple of runaways terrorising a couple of houses. And before we know it bam it's over.

Nate parker sold this movie as something that was made with the intention of causing some healing but overall the movie was neither here nor there

Gotta say, the competition for best actor is hella tough:

Denzel - "Fences"
Nate Parker - "Birth of a Nation"
Will Smith - "Collateral Beauty"
Don Cheadle - "Miles Ahead"
Stephan Smith - "Race"

All of them legit. :ehh:

Finally got to see this movie over the weekend and I cant front, I was disappointed. Movie had true potential, but ended up being some watered down white washed safe ass shyt.

Like the only thing it got right was the brutality of slavery. They made sure all the torture and hardship scenes were long and drawn out, but rushed through the revolt. My biggest gripe is that they changed up the ending to differ from what historically happened which lessens the whole rebellious theme the movie needed to have.

The pacing was awful. The movie should have given 1 hour to building things up and then 1 hour or at least 45 minutes to the revolt and its aftermath. Instead, the movies kinda over prepares you to expect some epic shyt that never happens.

All in all, the movie was average. It had some powerful scenes and powerful moments, but it never felt like a powerful movie.

Congrats Nate on receiving the Director's Guild Nomination for "Best Director" which is one of the highest honors for a Director. What Nate did on a limited budget was amazing and inspriational. Everyone can say what Nate should or shouldn't of done but the reality is he did it first, he got the money on his own and with a micro budget he brought Nate Turner to life. Salute. Nate sacrifice will inspire more Black, Latino and other filmmakers to tell our stories our way in the future.
