not at all

but when you look at how education is trending - the initiative has to become internal *immediately*. the handouts aren't likely coming and even if they are, it'll never be so substantial that the hands-off trends from this generation of parents and the last can continue either.
Right. I see ppl getting in the field, but you do have to put the work in. I heard it was super easy in the past, sure, but they def have positions to fill. It’s better to try than avoid the industry all together.

You really think the Tech ship has sailed for Black men due to outsourcing?
I think the really high salaries and job stability are a thing of the past due to outsourcing. I've been asked to train foreign replacements at 3 companies in a row. I quit each time when asked because I saw the writing on the wall.

I tell anyone brand new to the field to choose something else. Because it's highly unlikely you'll make it to middle age. Unless you're extremely gifted and can provide more value than someone making a quarter of your salary.

Damn, and I was thinking of applying for Sans institute course to work in Cyber Security. So what field do you recommend then?

This data sucks and it should be expected. It lines up perfectly with educational scores.

I don’t have any big ideas here other than stressing the importance of reading. Please read to your children and read books around them so they develop an interest.

I'm so thankful that my direct manager is an older Black man in his 50s. He's a data scientist and he is trying to mentor me in my role. Sometimes our 1:1s are him trying to coach me on how to navigate the bureaucracy of my organization and how to show my work. Other times he's assisting me with roadblocks of my day to day.

I think he feels like he needs to give back to brothers and sisters in tech before he retires. I'm fortunate considering I was so scared of the tech layoffs earlier this year and landing this role. My role also tends to be 175k+ commission so I'm fortunate but I want more of us to win.
The younger generation just doesn't get it. I've helped several get jobs, internships including family members.
Do you think they repeat the favor for anyone else? Or continue to grow their professional network?

They all learn eventually these companies aren't loyal. And you need to build relationships with people that are loyal.

I'm mentoring a young brother that's 31 navigating through tech. I think it's important to give back instead of trying to gatekeep success. You're totally right

I wouldn't spend my own money on overpriced Sans courses. Even companies are refusing to pay 8 or 9K for that garbage.

When I was starting out in a down economy back in 2007-2008. I went the Federal contractor route until the private sector job market recovered. But it required moving to where you had a military base and lots of government contractors.

Every black woman I know in Corporate America probably has twice the amount of contacts we do. If we moved like sista's we would be in much better shape.

But dudes stay hating on each other on the job. Always gotta be the lone token in the group.
:snoop:
I remember someone posted a thread about all the black c00ns in the tech field. The amount of hit dogs hollering in that thread.

responses in this thread is why the matriarchy runs the black community

The women dont have time for excuses because they have to raise the kids...
the men spend more time trying to explain away their shortcomings than they do getting ahead

women by nature make excuses for those they love...
the men find comfort in being with these women

also this
the black community runs on a poverty mindset...
if you dont see it its because thats all you know

Jim Crow did a number on us too because it degraded the family. Then we were thrown in the free market as a people.

Funny he mentioned Catholics. I was raised in the Catholic church and it's definitely different than the mainstream Protestant Christianity in the US.

you just reminded me I have family down south that go to a Catholic church.

They've been married for about 40 years and both their kids are successful and married

I never put that together till now.

I remember being a kid thinking it was odd for black people to be Catholic

Yeah I've noticed Catholics move different. My grandma sort of converted before I was born and liked the traditions etc. I went to Sunday school, was confirmed etc. It was incredibly uncommon to be Black in the south and Catholic.

I grew up in my family like the Huxtables lol. I recall in college I met a woman that was Hatian that I dated and she was raised similarly to me including Catholic. Pretty successful but never married. In another lifetime we probably would have been like the family members that you mentioned.

No doubt, they had a diversity initiative to get into the Sans academy for free. Its a process though with interviews, etc.

What kind of cybersecurity job are you targeting? Some are worse than others. For instance picking the Blue team you guaranteed to get used and abused.

Man tbh I was thinking Cyber Security Engineer or Cloud Engineer. I work at a Law firm and we have a whole wing of tech employees. I work in recruiting and Ive been here for 2 years now and helped hire people for our tech departments so they have rapport with me and I think would give me a chance but I need those certs and experience.
