The Alchemist shows off the similarities between the Kendrick Lamar “Meet the Grahams” beat and the Prodigy “Keep It Thoro” beat.

I'm sorry but rza and alchemist aren't even comparable. Period. Alchemist don't got a Cuban linx. Or a 36 chambers. Or a liquid swordz. Or an ironman. Or a forever.

I don't care about longevity. I care about catalog. Rza's work is pivotal to hip hop history. Without rza there is no Kanye. There is no alchemist. No madlib. Even Dilla eventually became a rza clone. Rza got too many babies in this shyt. By far the most influential producer of all time. Kanye himself said he got his whole early style from the rza.

Rza is the GOAT. End of story.

No doubt.

Who are your top 3 producers?

For me in no order

1. Premier
2. RZA
3. Alchemist

4. Kut Masta Kurt
5. Dre
6. Sermon
7. Necro
8. Pete Rock
9. Showbiz
10. 4th Disciple

Christ - they're ALL like Mozart's, Beethoven's to me. In terms of classic long term music that endures. I don't even check for classical too much.

I hope their music lasts just as long!
Big shout out to you for acknowledging Kut Master Kurt. Patnas confused…

Alc is a legend one of the goats. But I don’t know if he top 5.

For sure he ain’t touching
Preem
RZA
Dre
Kanye
Tip

A healthy debate can be had about him being better than
Pete rock
Havoc
Dilla
Madlib

He’s 100% better than anyone else I didn’t name.

nah dre the goat lol

He's not. People give him that spot more out of obligation than his work.

This is a case where people overrate longevity.

Al has been dope the longest but has never hit the highs of RZA, Pete, Dilla, and Premier. They all have a much higher ceiling than him in terms of talent and catalog. None of the albums he's currently making are touching 36 Chambers, Cuban Linx, Ironman, or Liquid Swords.

He's currently experiencing the same "go to producer" run Premier had but none of his beats match the work Preem did with Nas, Jay, and Big.

He can't match Dilla's technical skill, drums, sampling, innovation, and soul.

He has way more output but in terms of skill he's not even better than Madlib. Compare his Gibbs album to Bandana and Pinata. Madlib is way more skilled and diverse. Al has been spamming dark piano loops for a lot of his work. It's why I don't think his full albums are as strong. There isn't much variation from track to track, album to album. Throw anything he's made against Madvillainy and it's not touching it. You want to rate him over Madlib for output fine but I'm just highlighting the reason why it's faulty to value output over the work itself. You can drop a dozen 4 or 3.5 mic albums but if you don't have an Illmatic there's a level you can't reach.

I love Al but consistency over time is not enough. You need to shift the art, have classic albums, and be supremely talented. He comes close but never quite gets there because there are producers who are just better than him.

Ali's catalogue is amazing but having a lot of something doesn't make you the best at it. I'm a fan of All but these cats saying he's GPAT producer and all that, give me his fully produced albums that rival OB4CL, Liquid Swords, 36 Chambers, etc etc and YES, having a DOPE MC and a cohesive/seminal album is part of it that's the whole point.

He’s better than Madlib, Madlib doesn’t have a We Gon Make It, Alchemist has been way more pivotal to rap and his production has been more diverse.

Keep it thoro, man that beat was NASTY

He's had a whole lot of dark east coast beats, especially in the early 00s. A lotta freestyles been made over tracks like this:
