And this is only an issue because of the size of the country. Otherwise, there is nothing inherently wrong.

Nomadic cattle herding is backwards. No country which seeks to be an advanced producer of cow meat or milk trudges cows over 1000 miles. The 'cattle colony' solution is idiotic for a country as complex and multicultural as Nigeria. You cannot expropriate the ancestral lands of various ethnic groups without compensation for another ethnic group. Igbos don't demand land to build factories or shops. Why is the government giving Fulanis free land which belongs to Yorubas, Igbos, Ijaws, Beroms etc.

Im not here to judge whose culture is progressive

The conflict is obviously being handled poorly and anyone impeding on other peoples property is in the wrong including a government who backs said behavior

But the root issue is obviously too many people under different banners in a small space and there is no easy fix

No easy fix, indeed. Pastoralism, which requires a lot of land, won't be abandoned in Nigeria anytime soon. Especially when the ruling elite either owns the cattle or has a nostalgic perception of such a lifestyle. Neither will farming, given the lack of employment opportunities in Buhari's Nigeria.

No easy fix...but no ethnicity has a monopoly of violence in Nigeria anymore. It is not 1966.

So pardon my ignorance.

The boko haram stuff and the fulani cattle herding things are two very different issues right? The only similarities are both groups claim to be muslims but either way Islam is a non factor to the things going on?

What is the economic impact of this cattle herding industry?

Boko Haram and Fulani militant violence are two separate issues. Truth be told, the Nigerian military is actively involved in the following conflicts currently:

1) Biafran nationalists in Igboland
2) Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region
3) Fulani militancy in the Middle Belt
4) Banditry in parts of Northern Nigeria
5) Militants and oil theft in the Niger Delta

Northern Nigeria Islam is like Chad's and Niger's one where its more influenced by Arabic Islam. Fulanis who live in Liberia, Guinea, Ghana, Mali etc practice an Islam that is more relaxed and heavily influenced by African.
This isnt true. As @SonnyEMC said Northern Nigeria has school of Islamic thought/practice across the spectrum (different Salafi movements, Sufis, Shias, and more "traditional"s Sunni schools of thought) Same goes for Chad and Niger.

As far as "Arab influence" goes many in the Franco countries you mentioned share Sufi orders and schools of thought with Morocco. The Tijani tariqa (sufi order) for example has a big number of adherents everywhere from Chad to Senegal to Ghana to Morocco.
