The first standard gauge railway cargo train arrived in Kenyan capital Nairobi from Mombasa at the ultra-modern inland container depot which was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta a fortnight ago.

The arrival of the cargo train is in line with President Kenyatta’s promise to reduce the cost of doing business in the country.

In his New Year message, President Kenyatta said the new commercial cargo train would cut costs and delays in trade for Kenyans and its neighbours.

The President said the delivery of a world-class railway on time and within budget, would attract world-class manufacturing and value-addition investments, which are critical to creating jobs and business opportunities.

The cargo train carried 104 containers, which is almost equivalent to the trucks operating daily on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

According to the Kenya’s Ports Authority head of Inland Container Deports Symon Wahome, the new commercial cargo train will revolutionize the transportation of cargo in Kenya.

“While the meter train used to carry twenty to thirty containers, the standard gauge train will carry 216 containers,” said Mr Wahome.

He said four trains will operate daily and later increased to eight cargo trains.

The historic maiden cargo trip however got mixed reactions from Kenyans, who used social media to express themselves.

Its great news for the economy. Transportation costs will drop. Great for land-locked East African nations like Uganda and Rwanda.
Man fukk y'all truck driving mf's.
The opposition has an army of twitter warriors and bloggers who look for anything to complain about the government's projects. Like the comment about China is so dumb, Kenya is not an important exporter of raw materials. Its the opposite. The cargo line will mostly be used to import raw-materials and semi-processed assembly parts to be transported to Kenyan factories inland, this is the reason dry-docks were built deep in-land, to bring in the raw-materials from the coast and distribute them to inland factories.
But its better to have an active opposition than to not have one. The opposition and media keeps the government on its toes. Kenya's govt can't try getting away doing what other African govts do.

FG gets $550m from China for satellites’ procurement

By Isiaka Wakili | Publish Date: Jan 4 2018 2:10AM

The Chinese Exim Bank has agreed to pay the $550 million Nigeria needs to procure two new satellites, Communications Minister Adebayo shyttu said on Wednesday.

The minister disclosed this to State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

shyttu said the Chinese bank agreed to this following the federal government’s inability to meet up with its 15 percent counterpart funding.

“Initially, the agreement was that they will provide the cost of the two satellites, $550m minus 15% which is the counterpart funding. Because we could not afford this 15%, we’ve renegotiated with the China EXIM Bank and the China Great Walls who are the manufacturers and they’ve happily agreed to pay the entire $550m to procure two new satellites.

“The two new ones will ensure that the Nigerian satellite company which is NICOMSAT can conquer the entire African continent with regards to the provision of satellite communication services. This is a very big business opportunity and I’m sure that the Chinese appreciate the potential market which is so vast and that’s why they’ve agreed that even without our ability to contribute 15%, they’re prepared to pay the entire sum of $550m for the procurement of the two new satellites for Nigeria,” he said.

The minister said “it’s not a loan. It’ll be equity participation of the Chinese company into our business. NICOMSAT is a limited liability company owned entirely by the federal government. So, they’re paying that to finance these highly required facilities and we’ll agree on the percentage sharing. Of course, Nigeria has nothing to lose because we’re not putting anything into it in terms of financial resources.”

Asked when will Nigeria launch the two new satellites, he said: “It takes two years to produce because it’s when we sign the papers they’ll start production. We hope that before the end of this month, we’ll sign the papers and then they’ll commence the production. It’s upon the completion of the production that the two satellites will be launched.
