Do you think there should be a mechanism to mete out justice to genocidal dictators like Omar al-Bashir, Mengistu etc?

Not from the self appointed ICC or any European commission.... Tony Blair n Dubya are out here walking scott free

Don't let the perfect, be the enemy of the good.

No system of international justice would ignore power dynamics from the UN Sec. Council Members. However, we can still go after horrible people like Joseph Kony (who was referred to the ICC by Uganda).

The ICC Chief Prosecutor is from Gambia.

Also they have a huge focus on Africa because African governments like Uganda, Niger, Ivory Coast, Mali. DR Congo are sending their prisoners to the Hague

I don't think you know a lot about the ICC.

Jean Ping as AU head:

Jean Ping, the president of the AU Commission, told the French radio network RFI that the “ICC always targets … Africans. Does it mean that you have nothing on Gaza? Does it mean you have nothing [on the] Caucasus? Does it mean that you have nothing on the militants in Colombia? There is nothing on Iraq? We are raising this type of question because we don’t want a double standard

Jean Ping as head of Gabon's opposition:

Big whoop! They got a token :stopitslime:

Nope. They are a tiger with no teeth. Africa is the only place they can find both victims
and a narrative to keep this self serving facade up.

You mean to tell me the US/EU/Asia/Middle East are patron saints ? :usure:

Who will the ICC go after without Africa to prosecute ?

Russia, Democratic Republic of Congo interested in boosting cooperation — top diplomat

MOSCOW, March 22. /TASS/. Russia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are interested in bringing the trade and economic cooperation between the two countries to a new level, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a news conference on Wednesday following talks with DRC Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Leonard She Okitundu.

According to Russia’s top diplomat, the talks were held in a benevolent manner. "We discussed a wide array of issues related to our bilateral relations and the international agenda," he said. "We have traditionally friendly ties based on the principles of equality and mutual respect."

"We noted the good state of the political dialogue, including regular consultations between the two countries' Foreign Ministries," Lavrov noted. "We pointed to willingness to deepen inter-parliamentary ties, noted the need to intensify work on improving the legal framework. A number of projects and agreements are under consideration by the parties, and we will accelerate this process."

"We focused on the objective of taking our trade, economic and especially investment relations to a new level, including by promoting direct contacts between the two countries’ businesspeople," the minister said.

Moscow is ready to assist the Democratic Republic of the Congo in solving conflicts and problems that the country has been facing, Lavrov said.

The Russian top diplomat pointed to long relations between Russia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. "We are interested in developing ties in all spheres," Lavrov added.

"It is important to us to know about the efforts that the authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo make to normalize the situation, particularly taking into consideration the ongoing conflicts in the eastern part of the country," the Russian foreign minister said. "Only yesterday you were in New York, where the United Nations Security Council was reviewing these issues, so we would like to hear what you think about it."

"We know that your country is willing to assist its neighbor states in solving conflicts and problems that they have been facing. We are also ready to help," Lavrov added.

It's grandstanding. There is no complex conflict or complex solution in DR Congo. DR Congo is under occupation of Uganda/Rwandan rebel groups with the complicity of Kabila's govt. in Kinshasa who wants to remain in power. The killings in the Eastern part are systematic. They are taking out the elites such as tribal chiefs in order to make resource-rich Eastern DRC essentially part of the Rwandan state with the help of both rebel militias and FARDC (Congolese armed forces) because Rwanda or any other Tutsi groups are still a significant minority and not a demographic threat so they have resorted to extermination of the majority population.

Leonard She Okitundu (Foreign Minister) is one of Kabila's cronies, and he is part of a transitional govt. until elections in December 2017 I don't know why he is in Russia negotiating security deals when he probably won't be around a year from now because Kabila will lose the elections IF they are fair and square and will probably end up at the Hague for all the crimes against humanity.

In short, change the govt in Kinshasa, you will see all the killings magically stop.

Russia's playing chess while Trump is pouting at the board. DR Congo is very important for a lot of reasons...

All African countries should strive to have good relations with major powers. The trick is maintain your sovereignty and have an economic net benefit for your people.

Congo's current elites are parasitic monopolists so if any deal comes out of it, it'll benefit them. It's their greed which blind-sides them and allows Putin to check former businessmen like Gerhard Schroeder of Germany, Zuma of South Africa and now Trump of the United States

Kabila has a plan.

In spite of the nature of the DR Congo, he knows how to remain in power. He is the one, after all, who negotiated for Angolan and Zimbabwean military assistance after the assasination of his father.

Dang! Can you give me a link to the bolded? I knew about Tutsi groups in Eastern DRC but never about genocide on native Congolese ethnic groups. Ironic that its now the Tutsis doing the very same thing that they were victim too.

Indeed.

Yep and this is why the situation in the Congo is so complex. Do you want Kabila out? But that will allow Ugandan/Rwandan influence to grow. Or do we keep this corrupt figure who will limit the Rwandans/Ugandans.

Trump's dumbass isolation is going to be the death of America. DR Congo is VERY important and if I were Russia or China I would quickly snatch that treasure chest while Murica is distracted.

He is under too much pressure 2 UN workers were kidnapped last week and probably dead (one is an American, the other from a Scandanavian country) probably dead by now because they were investigating mass graves and found mass graves were security forces are probably responsible for. This same Foreign Minister negotiating with Russia hurried his ass at the UN Security Council in NYC yesterday to explain the situation. The pope cancelled his visit to DRC citing Kabila is a problem.

The pressure on him right now is quite great. But it was far greater last December. Now things are quiet after the death of Tshikedi (sp?) and the defeat of Hilary Clinton - who was active in Central African affairs and who is an ally to Susan Rice (spits).

I'm hedging here, but I think Kabila survives past 2018 as Congo's President. If he's willing to create a state of emergency to retain power, I wonder whether the masses in Kinshasa won't try to remove him by force...
